The mrs has done her CBT and wants to get some miles under her belt before attempting the big test so we've gone with the idea of 1-2 years on a 125, now women being women she wants something pretty and I know that's a big ask for under 1500, but which of the 125 sports are more reliable and represent a good buy?

Does it have to be a 'sports'? I got a YBR Custom as I thought they looked better that the standard YBR:

and it's definitely possible to get a decent one of them for £1500

CBR125.

Easy to get a nice one for that money. Light, low seat height, skinny, physically quite small. Perfect for the average lady.

I wouldn't go near the average £1500 Aprilia RS125. Not if your wanting a ready to ride bike that's going to be solid and need little doing to it.

I would think you'd land a decent CBR125 for that, and that would be a decent bike until you wanted more cc. You'd sell a clean CBR quickly too, and lose next to no money on one either, if you keep it nice.

A tatty less than spotless RS125 would need you to find the local village idiot and throw paint in his eyes before you'd get him to hand over £1500 for one IMO.

I'd personally tell her to go for the test and then get a bike. You get more bike for your money in the big bike world; you don't have to get a stupidly fast one either.

NSR125 if you want something actually a bit (though not that much) sporty.
After riding both a YBR and an NSR recently I'm definitely pleased that I did convince the NSR owner to go with that - but also, the inexperienced YBR suits her bike much more too, to be fair.

CBR125s can make decent buys these days, though they're a good chunk less sporty than the NSR.

Agreed. The CBR125 was definitely built with ladies in mind. Wink

Agree with this but a NSR is a 2 stroke. I'd always pick a 4 stroke over a 2 stroke. 2 Stroke oil must cost loads nower days also the NSR gets 40/50 mpg if youre luckly, the CBR gets at least 70.

But the NSR is actually 'sporty'. The CBR is a commuter with some plastic on top.
NSR isn't too bad on 2 stroke oil compared to some - and mpg isn't bad for a bike that a few years ago at least you'd need the m3 from the 3 series to beat to 60 away from the lights.

Now of course she may well just want 'looks sporty' and may actually somehow think the CBR125 does look sporty - the first 'face lift' looks maybe, but the original I thought just looked pretty silly.

But if she wants a bike that can keep a decent pace up, has acceptable suspension and brakes and can cruise comfortably on the motorway, the NSR is a much better bet.

hi,
wouldnt describe any of the 4t's particularly sporty tbh, & the ones that are, arent in your price range.
cbr is NOT in any way a sports bike, though it does have fairings. slow, small & boring as f*ck.
go with a 2t : mito, nsr,rs etc (not neccesarily in that order) & get a genuine 100mph & some fun, instead of 75mph that you get with a 4t, she will soon tire of it......
cheers,
GAZ

A £1500 budget will allow you a huge choice of makes and models. Personally with that budget I would get something like this:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/honda-cbf-125-m-2011/1015841855

Go in at £1350 and bank any leftovers towards the inevitable 'upgrade' fund. Wink

Anything 'sportier' looking will either talk the talk but not walk the walk, or break the bank (either in terms of purchase price, maintenance or both).

The 2t sporty 125's don't have anywhere near the reliability of the 4t's (as the op asked), nor are they particularly suitable bikes for a learner.

Something like the NSR will probably still cost similar to a small petrol car to run, yet offer the performance of a fair bit faster car at legal speeds.
An NSR or similar is likely to depreciate a lot less than a shiny CBF - especially a bit tatty NSR, which is unlikely to lose much value at all, even if dropped.

Assuming that plastic is her definition of "pretty", then +eleventy to the CBR125. It looks nice without being aggressive, it's neat, a smart choice economically, is easy and forgiving to ride and there are plenty of parts around for when if she drops it.

I'd have one as an urban / suburban commuter, then we can sync our periods and chat about which of us will marry Justin Beiber.

CBR125 is okay for women. The trouble starts when men ride them and they look like a monkey shitting in a teacup.

Have the rules changed on riding a 2T 125 when you only have a cbt?

No. There have never been specific rules in regards to two strokes.
There is a legal power limit, which applies equally to four strokes.
However, just as you're not allowed to go over 70mph on a motorway, there's plenty of people that decide that it's not a particular moral issue to safely go a bit higher.

Indeed, it's about 14.6bhp if I remember correctly. I consider riding a full power (30bhp-ish) sporty 125 on a CBT slightly worse than riding something like an unrestricted 600 sports bike after passing a 33bhp/46bhp test for some reason. I guess it's the fact that people who have passed a test, have at least proved they have some level of bike control.

Back on topic. Get a CBR125. Or argue with her, like I did with mine and get her a fairly tidy commuter bike that doesn't have (much) plastic to break when she inevitably drops it (about 5-6 times... Laughing ), on the pretence that you will get her a faired bike some time after she passes her test.

Not only would I consider it 'less' bad - we're actually talking more like 24hp for an NSR - so rather than being 3x the 33hp limit, we're talking that they need to knock about a third of the power they have off to be legal.

Back on topic. Get a CBR125.

Great if she likes the looks (the NSR looks much better to my mind) and doesn't actually want something sporty. Not so great if she does actually want sporty. Also not so great for improving bike riding skill or being a bike that will allow her to progress for longer riding it Smile.
