Also it may be worthwhile taking the front wheel out and giving the interior of the brake drum a quick service. Once the wheel is removed the brake plate lifts off along with the shoes. You can then remove the shoes, check them for wear while you are it and give them a going over with some sandpaper to roughen up the surface a little.
Then knock out the cam which attaches to the brake arm, you'll have to remove the spring and arm before you can do this; clean the cam and the hole thoroughly and apply some general-purpose grease to the cam and also to the part which holds the shoes and the round peg for the other end of the shoes. Basically any moving parts associated with the braking to stop it sticking. Reassemble it again, don't do what I did and put the speedo drive gear and washer in the wrong way
Apart from that, do what the people above said with regards to to adjustment and spring lubing
For what it's worth the brake lever should not be able to be pulled in fully, it shows the cable is out of adjustment and/or the brake shoes are very worn. Having the bike on it's centre stand with the front wheel off the ground, spin the front wheel and screw the adjustment nut under the wheel spindle until you can just hear the brakes rubbing, then back off half a turn or until it is no longer rubbing (NOTE: due to the shape of the nut can only be turned 1/2 a turn at a time, any less and it pulls the brake arm more and may cause rubbing even when the not fully adjusted. Sucking eggs I know but covering all bases ) ____________________ Honda CB500s (1999) - Honda CG 125 BR-J (1991)

Just went and had a quick play adjusting the cable, can no longer pull the lever all the way back, brake still stops it dead and it springs back fully itself with the brake light going off, thanks for the advice all, I'll lubricate the cable soon though, and check the brakes, although it did pass an MOT a month ago so is it likely they'll be worn?
Thanks for the advice, appreciate it ____________________ CG125, SV650S, CBR600F, GSXR600 SRAD |
