G'day all, took my ZX6-R to the garage today as wanted a couple of things checked out. The fork seals are leaking which I knew already and are in dire need of replacement. I have the replacements, but... the garage have decided its a 3 hour job so that's $250 (in Sydney) I am also planning to get them to give the whole bike a thorough going over to make sure that even though she sounds perfect she works perfectly as well.

That's $500 for a major service which is fine as you have to do what you have to do. But $250 for a seal change?!! What sort of bike specific tools do you need to do it yourself? I am an engineer so pretty handy with the tools.

Also, there is a quite annoying knocking coming from the front wheel, bearings were my first thought but they seem pretty tight. Any ideas?
Cheers all

Pads or discs not in tip top condition?

Forks, on yours are right way up.. so you could DIY for the price of seals and oil.

Pads look good, although I will have to replace them due to the weeping fork seals. Discs look visually straight but I will check them properly when I have some time in the day light. Think I shall do the fork seals myself, just called an old friend in england at Conquest motorcycles, who advised me how to do it.
Cheers guys

When does the knocking occur? I get a small knock whenever I first pull the brake lever...turned out its just the pads moving about a bit....doesn't affect anything else so i'm not bothered about it. If you've got a means of holding up the front end then DIY the seals!

The knocking might also be work fork bushes.

Spelling edit: worn, not work

Could also be the brake discs moving on the bobbins, mine do this and I was told they were shagged, so I got some new oem (sunstar) discs (ebay bargain) and they are exactly the same Rolling Eyes

I refitted the old ones, plenty of meat left so why waste them..

Thanks for all the replies, got up bright and early today and adjusted the chain before work and the knocking is gone. Said to the garage yesterday that I was sure the chain was the knocking sound but they focused on the front wheel.. Good mechanics eh!

fuck going to mechanics over here... I'm thinking about setting up a half-price mechanic thing as a part time job over here, so let me know if you're interested. I don't really have the facilities to do anything that involves structural parts being removed due to no stands or anything though, so that rules out fork seals.
