I'm spending more time with the bike at the moment as I'm getting it ready for a trip abroad. I went for a ride to put some new tyres on it today and figured I'd get the North Wales tag game tag while I was at it so went over the Great Orme in Llandudno.

After I got the tyres I took a ride over the Denbigh Moors and just about avoided a soaking. It was my first proper ride for a long time and even though I was scrubbing in new tyres I definitely had a blast. As I got closer to home and on more familiar roads I wanted to try something I've been meaning to do for ages. I've pretty much mastered the one handed riding photo but I wanted to try it with both hands on the bars for a change - I think they came out well:

I just need less skanky old gear now to make my arms and hands look a bit nicer Laughing

For the photo geeks: Canon 5DmkII. Canon 24-70 f2.8L for the static shots and a Samyang 8mm fisheye for the on bike shots.

Cheers Thumbs Up

I'm pretty sure that if I won the lottery I'd organise some kind of Great Orme TT. It's a fair old lap and there are some interesting sections on it! There are plenty of other great roads near to Llandudno so get yourself joined up to the Wales section for a nose!

I've been thinking of ways to use a DSLR to film riding shots for films etc and the only way I can think of is to get someone to go pillion and hold the camera. It's what we did here and it seemed to work ok, especially as I wouldn't have that frame around the image any more.

Or, I could just the GoPro in my camera bag Laughing

How do you guys (KLR and Hetzer) find these bikes handle? They look pretty hefty? They feel like that or are they pretty light once on the move?

I just got new tyres on mine and it feels like it falls into corners with ease again now after having a square back tyre and a rather pointy front tyre for so long Laughing

In all seriousness it's a bit of a barge but I knew that going in and it's what a lot of people would call character. I like hustling it around and I really feel like I'm working the bike instead of just tipping a shoulder into a corner and the bike doing everything for me. It certainly shifts well with it's torquey motor and you can be lazy with the gears but this bike definitely rewards a smoother rider as once you're set to a line it's pretty rock solid.

They do weigh something hefty like 240kg wet/stock (if I recall correctly anyway) and there's no getting away from that but I've had mine for 5 or so years now and have done over 30k miles on it and am thoroughly used to it. I still love it and it still gives me a great feeling when I ride it. I still catch myself turning around and admiring it when walking away from it after I've parked it up after 5 years of ownership, it must be love Wub Laughing .

Mine has a braced frame, braced forks, braced swingarm and fancy fork internals. Plus I'm pretty big. Result being mine goes around corners like a champ. How it compares to a stock bike I have no idea but I assume the mods are on it for a reason (one of the previous owners did trackdays on it).

With the gearing (-2f/+2r) this thing is more fun than any of my Blades, given that my focus is different these days.

What tyres did you get?

I'm really impressed with my PR3's I've just put on my gsxr. Less so with Roadsmart 2's on the ST4, though they're nearly knackered so the profile isn't the best.

I tried no mirrors and have to admit the bike looked much better but i tend to like to check there are no flashing blue lights behind me. Wink

I really love the look of these bikes. When I first saw it I thought.. hmm a bit retro, little ugly maybe. But everytime I have seen it since I have slowly begun to love them... tasty looking machine.

Cool pics BTW Smile Thumbs Up

THanks guys. Will have to get a ride on one but guessing they may be a bit too big and bulky for me to be comfortable with.

Nice pics btw, stickerbombed mudguard looks good!

Avon Storm 2's. It had some Michelin something or other on it when I got it and I didn't like them so tried the Avon Storm ST's when they came out and haven't looked back since. Once they're warm they're great, I've never felt limited by the tyres at all.

I've been commuting by bicycle through Manchester city centre for the last 2.5 years so I'm pretty used to this mirrorless thing but the police situation does worry me a bit. I was a bit paranoid about it when I went out on it yesterday but then I doubt having mirrors will save my license!

Braced everything

Where is your frame braced? I've not heard of that mod being done to a ZRX before.

Fork braces and beefier swingarms are popular mods though and then spinning the concentric chain adjusters through 180 degrees raises the back end a bit and makes it steer quicker too. I'm about 15.5 stone with all my gear on, maybe a bit more and my bike is pretty much stock in terms of handling. I think I even still have the original (42,000 mile old) fork oil in it Embarassed

I've thought about downgearing mine but I never got around to it. It's having ZZR cams put in it in the next 2 weeks so I'll see how I get on with them and maybe look at downgearing it after that if that's still not enough extra poke.

Ha ha cheers, I wasn't sure at first and it was only to cover up the cracks in it but now I've seen it on the bike and gotten used to it I've decided that I like it. Adds a bit of personality to the bike I think.

It's the silver bar across the side of the engine, same on both sides:
