Just went for a hoon, riding up some country roads occasionally hitting the rev limiter. Went round a bend and there were two girls on two horses on the side of the road. As soon as I see them I emergency brake down to about 20 mph then sheepishly gave them a 'sorry' wave as I went past I bet they were shitting it when they heard a screaming V-twin coming towards them. I felt like a right dick after. Second time it has happened in about 2 months.

Any way to avoid this happening again other than the obvious slow down? This happen to anyone else?

Twice this month I have followed horses that the riders can barely control, my bike is near silent and they still get spooked. First rider thanked me for being patient, second rider was far too concerned with controlling the horse.

The first horse took me backing off to over 50 meters before it calmed down. I crept up nice and slowly too so I don't know why it was so spooked. Just give them the space they need. I'm a big horse fan but personally I don't think they should be on the road, alas they are, so it's best to play it safe and hang as far back as possible rather than end up with half a ton of horse kicking out at you.

And your original point of any way of knowing they're there, in a nut shell, no.

Think most of us have done something similar, my worst was travelling quickly over a humpback bridge in the car to be confronted with a horse rider way too close for comfort. Managed to slow and avoid but it could have been far worse, and it was my own stupidity, nobody elses.

Hate to say it but just slow down, watch the road & look for clues, save it for the clear run where you can see through the corner fully.

My sisters ride horses, as MissEd says, you can't really avoid being on the roads to get to a bridleway.

I just ride past slowly in a high gear, then when I'm out of the way, carry on blasting.

They told me that bikers and blinged up chav cars are the most courteous on the road in their experience. It's usually the school run mum types who are discourteous.

Creeping up silently may be more likely to spook them than roaring up on open pipes. Bicycles are really bad for this, as the first the horse knows about it there is a fast-moving threat in its peripheral vision, so the flight response kicks in (sometimes literally).

I'm not saying you shouldn't slow down and be aware of the possibility that the noise of your bike might prompt a response, but I would also not over-do it and inadvertently make it worse by rolling up on silent approach. All I expect from another road user is a bit of space and a reasonable speed. What I will do is do my best to keep out of the way, moved onto the verge or into a driveway or something to let you get past with minimal interuption. If I'm on a narrow road and you're following, I'll usually trot to the next passing place rather than just amble along and let you simmer.

As said above, I would rather not be on the road.

I approached a horse and cart the other day in my lane out in the country.

Que me slowing down and pulling in clutch to slowly overtake and not to upset the horse (On the Duc)

Then BANG, back fire, FML Horse then gets freaked and jumps then goes into oncoming lane (nothing coming) and slightly blocks the road whilst trying to come to terms with what the fuck just happened.

Slyly ride past with the sorry and carry on hoping not to come across another

what gets me is when you hoon past a field with horses right next to the road, they could not give a single fuck that a loud ass bike has just screamed past them.

Yet stick a bint on the back of it and all of a sudden they shit their fuckingselves.

Fuck horses, they dont pay road tax, cba to clear the horse shit off the road, and then expect ME to slow the fuck down, clutch in and generally make as little noise as possible? erm, no.
