Sorry for another insurance thread but I'm just wanting to clarify if what I've deduced from my policy documents is correct.

I have a fully comp insurance policy on my car. The exact wording on my insurance certificate for driving other vehicles is this:

Admiral wrote:
The Policyholder may also drive with the consent of the owner a private motor car not belonging to him/her and not hired to him/her under a Hire Purchase Agreement, within our territorial limits, providing there is a valid insurance policy in force for that car.
The Policyholder must also be driving in accordance with the terms of a valid licence and must not be disqualified from driving.

My friends and I are driving to Germany in a few weeks and I was wondering if my insurance policy would cover me to drive my friends car in Europe. My policy covers me for European driving and my friend is also covered for European driving on his policy. This is what my certificate says about European cover:

Admiral wrote:
European Car Insurance Cover: This certificate is valid for, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Channel Islands; any other country
which is a member of the European Union and Norway; Switzerland, Iceland, Croatia, Andorra and Liechtenstein.

So would I be covered to drive my friends car abroad? I'm thinking I would be but it would depend on what Admiral mean when they say "within our territorial limits". Is that just the UK territorial limits or the European territorial limits they've outlined in the insurance certificate?

Obviously I'll be checking with my insurers before driving anything but just wanted to see if I'm even a bit right in thinking that it does only depend on their definition of territorial limits.

We tried adding me to my friends insurance policy as a named driver but they wouldn't do it as I don't have enough experience in fast cars (he has a Subuaru Impreza WRX STI) and 9 years on bikes counts for nothing.

On the face of it would appear to be covered providing your friend's car is insured.

In the past you had to get another certificate from your insurance company when going abroad. This covered all the reciprocal arrangements and such. Now not sure if required but a 'phone call to them should clarify although might just be a chance to sell you a 'green card'. Those who do the trip to Europe more often can clarify that one.

Just thought your cover may extend to uk and Europe. However, driving someone else's car then that'd be 3rd party only. So not sure if your 3rd part cover would then extend to Europe or that'd by UK only. Confused, you will be. I don't expect any of the telephone jockeys at the call centre to be able to answer that either as it will not be on a script.

If you stay in the EU then I shouldn't worry about the territorial limits. Got into places like Russia though and all bets are off.

Umm... it entirely depends on what they mean by "within our territorial limits". Who's "our"? What territory?

You'll need to check the definitions small print. Sorry.

i think it would NOT cover you. id interpret "within our territorial limits" as being within UK only.

Play safe, phone your insurers, give them all the details, ask for an email stating that you're definitely covered.

I agree with Keir.

Get him to get a quote for going on his insurance for a few weeks, might not cost a great deal.

Might cost a fucking fortune Rolling Eyes

Knowing admiral, they'll take your details on the phone and then charge you 90 pounds for the privilege.

When you get stopped by the police abroad, trying to convince them that you are insured by the labyrinth of wording on the insurance documents is going to be very tricky. Oh and being abandoned on the roadside when they seize the car could leave you with a bit of a problem, plus a very hefty fine. Is it worth taking the risk???

Just to update this in case anyone else is insured with Admiral and this comes up for you.

The guy on the phone was adamant that the driving other vehicles third party extension only applies within the UK, no hesitation in answering at all. Case closed!

Did he levy a 50 pound fee on you for telling you that?

Nope? I went through the normal options on the phone and was put through to a helpful person within about 10 seconds of making the final option. He even suggested other companies that might be able to offer temporary insurance so I'd say I got great service.

I might just be the exception to the rule when it comes to dealing with insurance companies though. My old motorbike insurance policy ended last month with MCE. They didn't auto renew (despite it apparently being a well known "insurance scam" according to a few members on here) and when I rang up to ask for proof of no claims for my new insurers they said that a letter would be sent out free of charge. It came in the post two days later and everything was fine.
