Ok so I'm selling my bike and should be putting it up tomorrow but last minute decision, Ebay or Auto Trader?

Ebay (assuming a bid)
Pros:
A LOT of users

Cons:
Can go for less in auction
Ebay want a percentage

Auto Trader:
Pros:
You can let people contact your phone without giving your number out
The ad can stay up a long time
You set the price

Cons:
More competition

I also don't know about prices, if anyone does, fill me in Thumbs Up

So what do you guys think?

Ebay for me, even though there are a few scammers knocking around. It's usually the most hassle free way to get a decent price IME.

Hmm,
Gumtree seems just full of people trying to rip you off.... although i did get it off gumtree originally... but it was a dog of a bike.

How much do Ebay charge, I would probably do a buy it now/make offer.

Unless it's really expensive or you're in a rush - start with free stuff like gumtree, adtrader, preloved, forums.
That's a good couple of rides worth of fuel you've saved, or a couple of sessions at a trackday.
You can always start with it a bit higher and see if you get any bites.

If it doesn't sell, move on to one of the paid ones.
I'd tend to go with ebay these days - as people can be looking for all sorts on ebay and see it, while biketrader is a bit more niche.
Also, you seem to get more places like this forum that have ebay affiliates - a good few bikes have been purchased when someone saw an ad on the bottom here and pointed it out to someone else.

It seems you have forgot about the classifieds ad on ebay.
It would be the best way to avoid eBay's high selling fees and also poor auctions.

Because you maximise the money you spend too.

Oh and yes - in most cases I'd use either classified of 'buy it now' on ebay. Only in a bit weird cases go for an auction where you think there may be multiple interested parties that might really WANT it, or you're just not sure of the value.

However, ebay vehicle auction fees are capped, so it's not too far off other options.

Only ever put one vehicle in the trader, got a call off a guy before it was issued and when I asked him how he saw the advert before it was in the shops he chuckled and said 'you gotta know the right people'.

I told him to fuck off and call back when the paper was out.

id recommend the classifieds ads on ebay,
i sold a car that way, only cost £15, it was no hassle at all.

I had a few silly offers just replied and said no,
one bloke kept upping his offer from a silly offer, then he upped it to a sensible price. Came with cash took me to the bank to check it all and pay it in, drove my/his car away

£15 was well worth it

With Ebay, do you get all that buyer protection stuff, and I only read about the driving to the bank to check the cash is real today, is that a common thing? I've bought 2 bikes in cash and it's never been checked?

I usually sell on autotrader. Fewer people trying it on or trying to swap the bike an xbox or a knackered peugeot 306. Too many ebay people seem irritated that I'm asking more money that the bike which sold at auction for £100 less, despite the alternative being at the other end of the country and fucked.

Not really.
If you pay by paypal you may do - but then the seller is likely to think you're a scammer.

I'm pretty sure that buried in the fine print, cars and bikes are not covered by paypal protection.

I find the best strategy for ebay is to advertise on free listing weekends, then negotiate cash offers with any interested parties in order to avoid paypal's robbing charges.

None of the above for whole bikes.

Word of mouth is the way to go. There was a time when corner shop cards turned up a lot of interesting stuff but the ebay parasites have that one covered now.

ebay is extremely useful for buying new spares. Genuine s/hand bargains are getting very thin on the ground now. Shilling is very common. It's also fairly routine for sellers to refuse to part with auction items that don't fetch what they consider to be a decent price - then get ebay to overturn negative feedback left.

Whole thing is a fucking scam now really. What's needed is a bike-only equivalent set up by someone who isn't a money grabbing bastard out to squeeze the maximum possible from every punter. Unfortunately the bike market has reached the point now where if you sold something at a fair price, you know it would then appear on ebay/Gumtree/the like a few days later for something stupid.

This is why you can no longer buy something old but fun, like a 350 Powervalve, for sensible money. I would make it law that any bike over 20 years old must cover a minimum of 5000 miles per year or be automatically scrapped. That'd stop the nut polishing fucksticks, I fancy Laughing

Pistonheads is free, doesn't seem to have a problem with scammers and may have a higher proportion of 'enthusiasts', ie well looked after bikes with inflated prices.

I've bought and sold bikes on there hassle free.

Ebay classifieds £15, just sold mine on there within 2 days for £200 more than I paid for it a year ago, on another note I saw it in a dealers for a grand more than I sold it for the other day Laughing

Had a few idiots message with silly low offers, one guy who wanted to give me a tenner and I wait for a month for rest and another who expected to pay by cheque, be wary of who you let view I've heard of scrotes viewing bikes then nicking them the same night.

Ebay for the win.

You don't get randoms calling you and talking shit. Fewer people come around to kick tyres. Once they've bid, and if they win a legal contract is formed.
