Q: Guess who bought a 14 year old bike with a lumpy idle, decided to take it to a main dealer for its full service (@ £60/ph), and just had their bill - £730 ouch.

A: This prat.

Anyone care to cheer me up with stories of other wildly expensive service costs?

Bike is a ZXR400 for those who care.

And newer machines tbh. Most dealers are cunts and / or charge obscene amounts for tiny amounts of work. Nearly all of them £70ish for a basic service I have met. For less than £30 I can change sparks, oil, oil filter, and air filter, all buying decent quality ones. Usually just needs things checked and an oil change.

Though Black Dog in Staines were good, I still cant justify paying £70 a service when most services just need an oil change and a few checks.

I bought a bike from a used dealer after three months the gear box failed, and the dealer tried to hit me with a repair bill of over £1,200 for parts & labour, except in then end I got it back for free!

Answer: I did not get enough good fair usage out of the bike before failure occurred, as according the Trading Standards Officer stated to them because I reported a problem the clutch changing at times before the 3 month warranty finished and they ignored it rather than investigate the problem - karma!

Game, set and match!

Did they contact you about the problems found and asked if you wanted them fixed or not by them? You must have gave them a blank cheque and they thought we need to make a profit on this to pay the bills ! Still it is a hefty bill you got in the end!

What did you actually ask them to do?

If £730 covers the valve clearances, carbs and parts thats pretty good going.

Hence why mostly everyone DIY's it on here with older machines Laughing

£420 fixed price 'platinum plus service' (included the usual stuff, plus things like new plugs, carbs balanced, valve clearances done) plus whatever it cost for the valve shims

£45 brake fluid replaced / bled

£30 air filter

£120 carbs stripped

Also, something broke, an oil router or something when they removed the head, that was £80.

The answer is in the question. Along with some form of lube. Wink

What did they do for the money???? A full service at dealer rates including valves should still only be like £350?

Self servicing is the way forward, my 7r has never ever had a mechanic touch it since my ownership, with the exception of mot's and tyres. That includes valve services including adjusting etc. Piece of pish really

I finally got my bike started today, after spending roughly a month trying to get it to fire up, all of which ended up being a very weak battery and flooded engine (caused by yours truly).

But before I can take it out anywhere I have to get a new MOT, which coincidentally runs in time with it's 16k mile valve clearance service, for which I have been quoted roughly £500 from 4 different dealers.

Also, my tyres will need replacing in the next month or two before my trip to Germany - £250.

I could go on, as I have an ever growing shopping list, but really what's the point. I do it because I love the bike.

Motors are an expensive interest/hobby.

Doing the services bit and pieces is easy i.e changing fluids it the checking over, running issues and spotting problems which a trained eye is better at.

last year I had a belter! bought my fazer with a full mot, knew it would need work come its next mot but didnt expect this much:

needed new downpipes so ordered then from ebay: £180
k&n air filter: £30
new carb inlet rubbers: £90
new front tyre: £70
engine work (sent to an engine specialist) to get the rotten exhaust studs out that the previous owner soldered in, the spark plugs that he horsed in at an angle, and a full service: £660

all in cost £1250 and that was without labour cost (apart from the engine work) because the garage is my cousins, good thing the whole thing took 7 months, gave me time to save Very Happy

nb, im sure it would have taken less time had it not been my cousin and wasn't charging labour, my bike turned in the the garage ornament!

runs lovely now though..... good fuckin thing too!

£60 p/h, how many hours to strip, rebuild & clean all the carbs - then set them up, then get the clearances done, then bolt the fairings, tank & everything else on - accounting for stuck bolts & repair to the head?

Add into that the cost of only using genuine parts and it starts to add up quick.

Jug of oil £35, air filter £30, 4x plugs @ £6, oil filter £8, rocker gasket £20, plug o-rings x4 £5 each, sump plug washer £1, so near enough £140 in parts - i'd pay money to see you do oil, plugs, filters clearances AND a carb setup in three and a half hours Laughing

I couldn't do them in 3 1/2 hours, but then again I wouldn't have to, do it at home in your own time and it doesn't matter.

Besides, I should hope that an actual mechanic could do it significantly faster than I ever could, considering its their job.

The main factor of his bill is £60ph labour....and also depends if the OP asked for a quote beforehand

Dont take old bikes to main dealerships.

If it needed the cams out to do the shims, then i can understand why they stung you to work on your 'POS' old bike... Laughing

I used to get all the older stuff to work on because my fellow workmates didnt want to get their hands dirty on anything that wasnt fresh from the showroom.

Not everyone has the time or technical ability to fix these things. I wouldn't have a clue were to start in servicing a bike.

Plus I like my soft hands and clean nails Laughing

Exactly. There are still back street bike shops that know what they are doing. You need to find one, cultivate a friendly relationship so you have somewhere to go that isn't waiting to rape you the minute you ride into their workshop.

Bought a couple of DT 125's, one non runner, the other had been driven into the back of a car, but engine was perfect, £950 all in.

Had them both in pieces, mixing and matching, making one complete bike.

Got half way through and went on holiday, woman I was living with had a local scrap man come round and clear out the garden, bike parts an all assuming it was scrap.

Gutted for you, they sell like hotcakes.

I bought an abused one a couple of months ago from a chav mong, £600. Tidied it up, got it running nicely and stuck it on ebay. My phone never stopped ringing and I sold it for £1250 cash about two hours after the advert went up. With hindsight could have got more Laughing

I do all my own work* precisely because dealers are such a shower of thieving fuckers.

*One or two things you can't easily avoid having done by third parties, such as rebores or crank rebuilds.

For £730 I'd want the bike worked on by Erv Kanemoto.

Don't assume all dealers use genuine parts Wink I know of 3 that don't, all big names too... but Shhh! Laughing

+1, have a decent MOT/repair place that I go to, quoted me £150 to strip the CBR and check the valves, then price of shims should they need it. £150 for a sports bike to be stripped of its plastic and then loads of bits pulled off sounds like a great deal to me.

Dealers wanted 4 hours labour "to start with" Laughing

Or if you are lucky enough to live in or near London Shocked

There is another option, Ladies and Gentlemen, I present

OMC https://www.ovalmotorcyclecentre.co.uk/web/index.php

Here you work on your bike with their tools and equipment, and if you get stuck they will lend a hand/advise.

Or find where your local couriers go Essential Rubber in the east end of London is pretty popular. I have used a back street garage near me for so long I have watched his son grow up Surprised reasonable prices great craic always lovely old bikes to drool over. Wouldn't touch a dealer with a barge pole.
