Apologies in advance as I'm hopeless at anything mechanical:
Well the tailpipe on my trusty dt125 had gone rusty after 5 years and had holes in it so I needed to replace it. My mechanic guy said the front pipe was fine, just the tailpipe needing doing, so I got a cheap 'big one' tail pipe from ebay, and also an exhaust joint rubber
(like this:)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORCYCLE-EXHAUST-TAILPIPE-RUBBER-YAMAHA-DT-/300558072498
, which looked as though it was the thing to join up the pipes. I had no idea if the big one would fit onto the standard pipe so bit of a gamble...
Anyway I got my mechanic guy to have a go at fitting it, and it was working ok for the first couple of weeks, but it got a lot louder, and when I took the panel off to have a look it now looks like this:

And it's now blowing at the joint.
So not sure what to do..
1) could get another rubber? But why did it fail in the first place? Presumably not heat as they should be designed for heat. So just fatigue from moving around? If so another one would do the same?
2) can I get a guy to weld them together?
3) Make some kind of clamp between the pipes?
Any other ideas? Cheers. |

I have never seen a rubber joint in an exhaust before ____________________ Bikers make great organ donors, get 115 on your licence today. |

Yep Ariel most of the ones I saw on ebay etc were rubber. I also wondered if the rubber joint had perished because something they had applied to the joint had reacted to it, it was blue around the broken area?
But interestingly the original joint I *think* may have been metal with a jubilee clip round it.
So I've actually found this on amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/LARSSON-connection-gasket-25x29-5x25-mm/dp/B008VNBLK6/
https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41O7VR80NKL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
which looks the closest to the original I've seen so might try and get hold of that.
And my brother has offered to try and fix it up at his at the weekend, where he has a welder and other equipment. I'll try and get a photo if we get it fixed hehe! |
