I have my bike booked in for next week following the suspension linkage shearing.
The particular problem I found out was due to a recall Triumph issued a few years ago. It hadn't been done on this bike for reasons unknown.

when I originally called the local dealer at the start of the week, they happily told me that they would order the replacement part. I told them it would also need collecting which they obliged, telling me it was all covered under warranty.

I called back today to check if the part had arrived and to book in. "About an hour to fix it" the guy on the line told me. I explained that it wasn't a simple case of replacing the faulty part as it had totally sheared.
He went on to tell me that he would have to get in touch with the warranty department, as if the bike had been recalled when the recall was sent out, it wouldn't have caused so much damage!
He also went on to say I would now be charged for collection.
I've tried ringing Triumph warranty department, but closed for the weekend.

It has left me fuming. Surely if the part wasn't a problem in the first place it wouldn't of happened, therefore why should I be penalised?

Just tell them you will be talking to the press about their attitude.

Did you check for any recalls on that model before buying?

Can't say I did, but to be honest I wouldn't purchase a bike on the strength of recalls.
I did my research into reliability etc and the the Sprint had consistently good reviews. In fact it was probably one of the best sport tourers of it's era.
The guy before had owned it for 4 years with no problems. I ride 10 miles up the road and a recall part fails on me. Just my luck really.

I spoke to the previous owner, who told me that the bike had been to a Triuph dealer on at least two different occasions. Neither time had the dealer picked up on the recall!

Spoke to my local dealer, (JS Gedge in Hastings), and informed them that as it had been in on two different occasions and the work had not been done each time, it would be unfair to put the onus on the previous owner.
I think I have them by the danglies now. I have asked that since it is the fault of Triumph that the recall was never picked up, that the collection charges should be wavered, since this could of quite easily ended in a fatal accident (I'm lucky it failed on a straight and not a bend) due to incompetence!
I'm also going to try and get Triumph to agree to replace my rear mud guard as it is totally fcuked now due to their negligence.

Me 1 - Triumph 0

I'm going to call Triumph warranty department on Monday and milk it a bit more. I'm loathed to pay a penny for this shit!

You'll want to have a read of the VOSA recalls site. Their code of practice explicitly is crystal clear that it's Triumph's responsibility to notify the vehicle user, and notes that several communications may be necessary.
