The old volly is making that tell tale sound that the rear brake pads are down to the metal. Considering I got an advisory for the wear level on them on its last MOT (6months ago) that's not bad going. Going to whap some new discs on her whilst I'm at it, as the old girl had been stood for quite some time before I bought her and they're looking a bit worse for wear.

The thing is, as the old girl is not a "performance" vehicle, and is driven by my very mature self... I don't see the need for anything too fancy as a replacement. However, I frequently carry 3/4 people plus scuba gear for everyone, so the brakes will have to cope with quite a bit.

I've priced up OEM pads and discs at £110 all in, both sides, but there are plenty of cheaper options out there. Pagid are £70 both sides, Eicher are 50quid both sides. Anyone got any experience of these cheaper ones? I should add that all of these prices are from pukka motor factors.

Looking on the bay reveals a whole host of wonderfully cheap products. However I live by the old adage of stuff being too good to be true... And my mind instantly says fake...

These'uns

Uber cheap

Allegedly OEM

The OEM ones I'm particularly attracted too.

Up till now, I've simply bobbed into the local motor factors (who I'd been using for years), had a bit of banter and walked out with pattern parts that I knew wouldn't be shonky. I'm now several hundred miles from them and it's pretty much the first time I've needed anything more than oil and wiper blades. Help, reviews and tips would be nice. Bearing in mind I transport my kids and pregnant wife in this car, so gambling on stuff being okay isn't an option.

Cheers folks

Just to add, I'd think most motor factors source their goods from similar places and I'm sure at some point you'll have to use your new local motor factors

Pagid make an awful lot of the OEM pads anyway. I'm about to buy some for my discovery as they are around half the price of genuine LR ones, which will be made by someone else anyway.

I regularly carry 4 people, dogs, and tow trailers, as well as the vehicle itself weighing nearly 3 tons.

Pagid, mintex, ebc (although I think their redstuff pads are ropey) ferrodo are all good makes Thumbs Up

Cheers for the replies gang.

Didn't realise there was quite so much bias towards the front brakes. I presume it's similar principles to racing where you want the front tyres loaded for more grip rather than the back end stepping out.

Thanks for the review on the various brands. I've probably used most of them before, I've just never really payed that much attention as the guys at the old place never steered me wrong.

The 40quid full rear disc & pad set delivered off the bay... Too good to be true?

What shit do you think Kwikfit and co fit, OEM?

I'd happily fit the cheap stuff on 90% of cars.

The FRONT discs and pads I fitted to my last car cost £45 and worked fine (Mintex) Thumbs Up . You'll be fine with cheap rears on a family wagon.

Haha... Wouldn't know. I Wouldn't trust them changing the fluid in my screenwash, let alone anything else. Not a fan of garages personally and opt to do whatever work I can myself.

Them OEM volvo ones look good for the price, but a set of Mintex with pads for sub £50 can't go wrong with that.

The redstuff pads are designed for fast road / track use, they're shite until hot! Running to the shops means you'll have almost no brakes.

They're pretty decent on track though.

Had them on a 440bhp Evo 8MR which saw serious fast road use, still think they were shit compared to Carbotech and Carbone Lorraine pads Wink

Why do car parts shops call themselves Motor Factors?

Well Brewer is a thundercunt, so that explains it.

I'm going down to Sainsbury's Food Factors tomorrow. Might go to the beer factors in the evening. Need the Petrol factors on the way.

Bag o' shite.

I like the Fred Flintsone style of brakes. No matter the cost, as long as it passes an MOT, jobs a good 'un.

Is it not to with the the fact they essentially order stuff in from 3rd parties rather than buying stock and storing it in their own warehouse to sell? Unless it's sparkplugs etc, typically whenever I've ordered from a motor factors, they take a minimum of 3hours to get the item in stock, sometimes a day or two. They're rather more like middle men than a retailer.

I guess the reason sainsburys stores are not factors is because when you go in there, you don't speak to someone, ask them for some carrots, they ring up a farm, order them in for you, pay the farmer with your money and take a % commission. They buy the carrots first, then sell them.

so whats my ware house full of then Very Happy

its because most of the stuff is in the ware house and you cant just pick it up off the shelf like you can in a shop

pagid and mintex are euro car parts cheap ones they will do the job but may find them noisy

ferrodo are better if you can find them we mainly have returns of pads with cheap discs being used

apec also seem to be ok we dont have many warrenties at all with them

I've used Mintex pads on cars before, no issues with them at all.

I'd be really surprised if you couldn't get standard Ferodo pads for the back of a Volvo s/v40 though? Halfords probably stock them, or Lucas pads if they don't have Ferodo.. wouldn't expect them to be more than ~£40

found these for a 1997 Volvo s40:

https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volvo_S40_1.8_1997/p/car-parts/car-service-parts/regular-service/brake-pads/?101660228&1&25b11ea8e97c343312f934070a5b4b4e4bb79b2b&000036

Pagid pads on sale? that's searching for a 1997 volvo s40 though, they have a little car finder box on the site to choose the right model/year?

Edit
Forgot link to rear discs also:

Bought both front and rear Mintex discs and pads from exact same seller on Ebay (quality.car.parts) for my Volvo over 5 years ago and had absolutely no problems with them.

Like you I was wary of the cheap price, but going by the Volvo board chatter they are a decent enough make!

Rears are a pain in the backside as well, if the S40 is anything like my S70 there will be a small adjuster to back off the handbrake shoes in order to remove the disc (the disc acts as a drum brake). If the disc is well worn, they can become wedged in a grove....so don't be afraid to back it off as far as it will go and pound like hell with a mallet!

Also, if it's a high miler, replace the handbrake shoes - I skimped on this and they got so won eventually the lining fell out into the disc and locked the wheel!

Bought the cheapest I could find on eBay and half the price of motor factors. 30 quid got me a pair of front brake pads and discs. 15 quid a side, bargain for a mondeo!
