So, a bit of background on this first. About 2/3 years ago I purchased this bike unseen over ebay as a first bike, but was unemployed and being 17 didn't think about paying for gear, insurance and my CBT and ended up spending the tiny amount of savings on this bike.

Well the bike arrived, and it sounded sweet, started first time everytime etc, only just over 30k on the clock, I'd fallen lucky, but due to the aforementioned lack of funds the bike ended up just sitting in the garden, slowly depressing me and then it just stopped running completely.

About 3 months ago was the first time it went under a proper cover, before that it'd had a bit of tarp over it that kept a bit of the weather off, thankfully leaving it with just a bit of surface rust on the chrome.

So that's the background on the bike, now for the current stuff, about 2 weeks ago I returned from a month in Australia, originally intending on selling/swapping the bike for anything really, but then while doing a bit of maintenance on my CG I realised I don't want to be someone that just rides and can do the basics, I want some real mechanical knowledge about bikes, and I have the perfect thing to learn on there!

Off came the cover, new battery in, nothing on the starter but all lights and indicators working ok, switches stiff and a loose connection in the wiring. Attempts at bump starting it resulted in nothing, apart from letting us know it wasn't seized. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing was working, I was slowly getting wound up and frustrated with myself then saw my rubber mallet. The old trick of tapping the solenoid etc popped into my head and I tried it.
The started motor jumped into life, but nothing on the engine. Played about with the choke and slowly it started.

Quick inspection shows the carb could do with rebuilding, the wires in the switches on the left grip need some work, there's a small hole in the exhaust, the chrome could do with polishing up and the gears aren't great. That and the chain is completely rusted, so I'll replace that and the sprockets. So far that seems to be all that needs doing, and I'm looking forward to getting my teeth stuck into it.

Pictures will be added in time and I'll try to keep this thread updated, I know to many working on a little 125 like this seems like nothing, but we have to start somewhere!

One last issue, I can't get the fuel filler cap open, the key won't even turn in it, would I be correct in thinking that this is likely to be caused by the fumes from the petrol evaporating and pressure building and it can be remedied by removing the fuel hose to release the pressure?

Any advice or little tricks will be appreciated and remember, looking forward to getting her on the road!

Taffers,Is that you.Smile

Spray WD40 in where the key goes and leave for a while or over night, usually works for me.

Thanks mate, I'll spray some on when I get up in the morning, hopefully it'll work for me!

If this is a success I'm tempted to buy something else as a complete rebuild project, so if anyone has anything suitable feel free to message me!

Well the WD40 didn't work, but a quick removal of the tank and fuel tap released the built up pressure and then the cap came off no problem.
I need to replace the fuel tap at some point because the bolt at the bottom for the filters etc has been chewed up completely by a previous owner, but no big deal. The carb had a small leak but using chemical metal I've been able to seal that and it seems strong.

All that's left to do is a small electrical problem with the indicators, and get the exhaust welded at work as it's blowing slightly. Also need to sort the throttle as it's sticking. Thinking first I'll replace the throttle cable, then if that doesn't work it'll be a case of looking at the throttle valve assembly.

After that it should be a simple case of adjusting the idle speed and all those smaller things then put her through the MOT.

A few small cosmetic jobs to do, the chrome could do with a clean up and the seat needs re-covering then she's good to go.

I've really enjoyed doing this, learning loads and a massive sense of pride! Can't wait to find another to do when she's complete!

Quick update on this. Bike is now just down to the exhaust and getting the seat recovered.

Exhaust is taking so bloody long cause of a single seized bolt, decided I'll just take the whole bracket off and slide the end can off and get that into work to sort there.

After that I'll clean up the center stand and hammerite it cause it looks tatty then MOT and sale!

Other bits that cropped up in the process was cleaning the carb (only did that after I had a problem with my CG carb) the new fuel tap (fell lucky at a breakers yard and only paid a fiver) and I changed the chain and sprockets.

WD40 is NOT a lubricant, to lube the key mechanism you should use graphite powder. Thumbs Up
