Hi guys,

I'm picking up a 1992 XJ 600 on Friday and need to fit a restrictor over the weekend. I can just about manage to clean the chain on my CG so I think I'm really gonna struggle with fitting the kit. Has anyone had to do this before and could help? I'm in Leicestershire, can pay with beers or whatever lol.

Also, anyone know if there is such a thing as a motorcycle maintenance course that I could do to learn a bit more about servicing my bike?

If you were nearer to me I might have been able to come and help you. It's easy enough anyway. I don't know about your bike but on mine I just had to take the tank off, airbox off and lift the carbs up then put the washers in. I'm sure there will be a video tutorial on youtube somewhere or a better write up than what I have done. I really is easy though, even if you have no experience I think you'll be surprised afterwards by how easy it was.

easy as pie, I restricted my xj

take tank off (2 bolts)
take airbox off (1 bolt, 4 clamps)
take carbs of (4 clamps)

pop restrictors in, and do the reverse to put it back together

AS already said easy enough, but make sure you put back all the breather tubing on the airbox in the correct locations.
Also the tank tubing as above(petrol feed, vacuum pipe, breather pipe).
If you dont have a manual its probably best to make notes or even take photos of where everything goes before removing it
By the way, leave fuel tap in on position, not prime and you wont lose any fuel when you take off the tank. Also remove tap control lever before removing tank as its very easy to damage when tank is off the bike.
Good luck

You're only just down the road from me, literally. I'm in Stoney Stanton. Shocked

I've not fitted restrictors before but they seem simple enough to do. My carbs are off on my bike at the moment and I can actually see the restrictors*!

*How they haven't fallen out yet is beyond me. Shifty

Almost certainly. Coming up from a CG125 and requiring restrictions suggests beyond probable doubt that he's on a restricted licence, hence needing a 33bhp restriction.

Can't think of any other reason to restrict a bike to be honest. Just don't fall for the F1 bollox and pay £100 plus for a set of washers and a useless certificate.

FI International, they sell restrictor kits with "official" certificates. There's nothing official about them, you don't need a certificate, just that the bike is a maximum of 33bhp.

The only way to prove it is to dyno it.

They don't Laughing At least not without going to a lot of hassel. Unless you're riding something over 500 it's unlikely you'd be stopped anyway. It might be test on a dyno if you crashed, but only if the bike isn't in too many pieces. The number of people who've been caught riding without restrictors is very small (but it isn't zero), which is why an awful lot of restrictors "fall out".

EDIT: Forgot to add. You don't have to prove it's restricted, they have to prove it isn't

An awful lot depends on what bike it is. But generally, you only really notice at the top end e.g. over 90 mph. Most people go with a 650cc or so to restrict, you wouldn't want to do anything much bigger as it would affect the bike a lot.

I presume you're talking about taking the MOD1 & 2 on a 125? If so (and it's geared), then he can rip up those L Plates and buy anything he wants. He just need to make sure it's around 33BHP either by design, or by restrictors.

You could do a lot worse than read these articles;

They're from one of the poster's on here, and massively helpful.

What about 35kw inlet restrictors?
Any idea how big the inlets are and if ones for a bandit600 may fit? Razz

Depends what model. I have carb rubbers that I can measure if you like, but they're in the garage so you'll have to wait until tomorrow Laughing

No idea about the bandit. I've never seen one of those naked yet so I haven't a clue what mysteries she hides inside.
