I haven't done a longish bike trip for a few months. So plotted a route largely offroad, 400 km, to do in 1 day. The idea was to avoid people as much as possible, avoid tar, take remote unpaved back roads, up through mountains, sandy sections, muddy sections, black rural areas, and only go through 1 town to refuel.

Mud may be a bit hard to find. Its mid winter and very dry and sunny. A chillo low to mid 20s.

Here is the track. Will post pics after the weekend Mr. Green

https://goo.gl/maps/T7iEM

My son cant go as he tore 2 ligaments in his fingers, and has his hand strapped. So it is a solo trip. And nothing can ruin the peace and enjoyment of nature more than a herd of bikes and riding in a cloud of dust watching for other riders.

2 bikes, at most 3 is OK for offroad. But solo is 1st prize!

The ride today was about isolation, lots of bush, and sand sand and sand. Over 400 km of isolation and only went through 1 town.

The day starts with getting petrol. No removing lids or getting off bikes here; hewers of wood, drawers of water and pumpers of petrol do it for us.

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00075-20130601-0928_zps933cb2da.jpg

Going out on the Moloto road, still on tar a darkie cop pulls me over.

Turns out he just wants to chat and ask me about my bike, how fast it goes etc. Not even angling for a bribe 'Its so hot today and I have nothing to drink etc...

after 60 km of tar, I turn off to do some real riding. The first bit of gravel near Rust de Winter

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00076-20130601-1028_zps47dfdb46.jpg

African yield sign

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00077-20130601-1034_zps0bf2856b.jpg

The road through a former tribal area varies from sandy to badly rutted

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00078-20130601-1050_zps445d3b33.jpg

From there it is towards Settlers, a small white farming area

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00079-20130601-1107_zpscc684d80.jpg

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00080-20130601-1118_zps1c0814aa.jpg

some of it is good fast gravel where I can hit up to 100 kmh, but it is corrugated. So lots of standing on the pegs.

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00081-20130601-1118_zps05e0c714.jpg

From there, with 150 km done, I head to Warmbaths for fuel. There will be no other towns for 250 km from there. Climbing out of wambaths I enter the Waterberg mountains

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00082-20130601-1159_zps8616e092.jpg

The road now starts to be very coarse sand and gravel over a corrugated hard surface. Treacherous. Any bit of brake and the bike slides over the loose stuff, generally the rear end slides out.

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00083-20130601-1200_zpsd9a999f3.jpg

This is what the surface looks like

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00086-20130601-1216_zps5cb1ba3c.jpg

It is Mid winter. The days are short and cool. Only 26.2 C at 1230

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00087-20130601-1221_zps96f47d4f.jpg

The corrugation gets exhausting

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00090-20130601-1236_zps931ec164.jpg

And that sand

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00091-20130601-1246_zps2db4e9f2.jpg

This whole section goes right around the Mabalingwe Game Reserve. Bikes aren't allowed in, so Im following the fence line outside

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00092-20130601-1247_zps8609c55b.jpg

Figure I have to greet the BCF liberals

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00093-20130601-1248_zpscfb5a6cd.jpg

I stop for a coke at a small trading post/bottle store. Nothing but drunken darkies under the trees outside. But just for the Liberals, here you go.... be my guest to have heart wrenching moments

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00094-20130601-1314_zps48406442.jpg

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00097-20130601-1353_zpsa946efdf.jpg

From there, I cut across through Leeuwpoort, which is nearly 40 km of empty gravel. Not a soul, not a house.

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG00098-20130601-1353_zpsab5d124d.jpg

Reaching the Crocodile River, it is a white farming area. Where you have whites there is economic activity. where you have darkies absolutely nothing is going on. You can see a farm in the distance. Never in the history of Africa has a darkie diverted or impounded water, hence never discovered irrigation, except by hand.

At Beestekraal, a small farming siding, I stop for lunch

From here it would have been tar home. But after 20 km of tar, it is too boring so I turn off. The last bit of gravel before hitting town.

do you have to take anything extra for survival? I mean, how far from civilization do you end up, where is the remotest place that a brake down would be a problem?

Looks like a cracking day out. How many other vehicles would you meet on trip like this, looks pretty deserted in the pics.

Does it not worry you that the baby in the pic may have suddenly sprung at you with a panga concealed in it's blanket ??? Wink

This trip like 100 km between towns. But nothing on the road in between as much of it is game reserves or tribal areas. In the Karoo empty distances get longer

The bag on the back is tools, tubes, compressor, etc. On my back I carry a camelbak, with 2 l of water.

I generally have a firearm and first aid kit in a tank bag or under my jacket. But I knew I would be riding sand so I didn't want a tank bag.

some stretches had no cell reception. So at worst would have to walk to nearest reception. Not so easy in MX boots. But if you are fit enough it is doable.

saw about 4 or 5 cages the whole day on the gravel stretches. more on the tar.

Much of the area I went through is empty.

Not worried about darkies I come across. They don't expect me, and if you stop they realise you are not afraid of them, so they don't try anything. It isn't their way anyway. They tend to pick out soft targets, plan it and come at night. They don't expect you in their tribal areas, so unless you come past there each day and they know you are coming, it is safe. Of course if you fall and hurt yourself and they come across you, different story. At the minimum you will be robbed of everything. They do it to their own kind as well.

I always stop in at darkie spaza shops for a cool drink, greet them etc. Sometimes one will get the nerve to come and ask me where Im going, am I not afraid on a bike, and being alone etc. And we will chat, talk about our kids, the problems in their culture etc. Many will often tell me they wish whites were in charge again as they are suffering now.

I enjoy my drink. wave them cheers bye and off I go. Sometimes they tell me if I ever go to that village to ask for so and so etc. I usually get on with darkies. Respect the culture gap and keep my distance and wont have them over for dinner. Far more time for them than for white liberals.

Just one time, not a rural area, a large darkie township, a darkie tried to knock me off my bike by swinging a bag of something at me. It was at a speed hump so he thought I would slow down. I just stood on the pegs, gave throttle and flew over the bump, elbowing him in the face. The blow glanced off my shoulder armour. I saw him in my mirror holding his face. Hope he swallowed a few teeth.

the lefties are more emotional and irrational than teenage girls in puberty.

the darkies are alright, on their side of the fence. Not in my house or family, and in general they certainly cant run a nation or a business or anything more than a tribe or street gang. Their historic lack of achievement testifies to that.

they are like the ant and grasshopper fable. dancing when the sun shines, starving and dieing the rest of the time.

Cant share a beer with a muzzie but will have tea with him. Doesn't mean I will convert, think it is right for him to move to my community, put up a mosque, complain about pork in the shops etc. Same with a darkie. This area is owned by white people. the businesses were started and are run by white people. behave according to our standards or fark off back to your tribal area and starve because your way builds nothing and you want to take from me.

I don't go to darkie tribal areas and yell at them to get their cattle off the road, not to litter, don't walk on the road and behave like white people. Let them live like in their culture in their own areas. But when they come to white areas respect our culture. We don't want your darkie shit on our streets, just like you don't want whitey rules and discipline in your villages

wish I could do this on a lazy weekend!

I've been to SA a couple of times I think - my dad used to fly with a family friend who own an aerobatic team down towards Plettenburg Bay. They have a place in Pretoria that we went to as well. Got to say I was amazed at the amount of security they had around the houses.

My girlfriend is going to spend a month down at a farm about 40km NW of Pietermaritzburg, I'm very jealous!

A simple ride report would suffice.

Tedious and repetitive...and that's just the photos. Razz

im east of Pretoria. Security comes with darkies. as you brits will be finding out.

NW of maritzburg you are in the Drakensberg, Stunning mountain scenery. any idea where? Nottingham road? Underberg? all very English.

Plett is south coast. a bit touristy for me. I think many moffies go there as well lol!!!

it's a place called Fort Nottingham. She's going to do some work there at a stables as she's studying to be a vet, pretty good work experience though. apparently learning to drive too - could be interesting for her when she gets back here!

I was 11 when I went to Plett, i'll never quite forget the braai on christmas day Smile

Nottingham road. stopped there my bike trip in jan. she will know this place if you send her the pic. did a 3000 km trip across Zululand and the Drakensberg. On gravel

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130110-00782_zps7b7c66c5.jpg

Braai on Christmas day in traditional. depending on faith, it is midnight service chirstmas eve, or Christmas day, prezzies for kids, then braai or big lunch. Anglicans do the midnight service. rest of us Christmas day. but the family braai is normal.

I used to tease my kids father Christmas cant come as it will trigger the alarms and he will be shot for break and enter lol

But father christmas always avoided the alarms, the rotweillers, the coals I left burning in the braai to heat up the chimney, and darkie hijackers. Mr. Green

from me it is about 4 hrs, if she likes bikes and wants a ride up the Drakensberg give a shout if it is fine with you. Thumbs Up will take another ou, even a woman, with so it is on the up and up with you Thumbs Up

a ride to Underberg on gravel by bike is a nice experience, done it a few times, but must do it I the morning before the rain comes in. better if you take her of course, but hey, can do it pillion. Ive taken pillion on far worse.

Chek my thread on 3000 km through natal. some pics are from there.
