What do you want to do with the bike?

Commuting?
Fast 'sunday' riding?
Long distance?

£1500s enough for 400 insurance at you're age. Search around, you will see.

£2300 will get you one of the best 400s.

id suggest spending less on a first bike, say £1500. you can get a really nice 400 for that. Then its not a big a deal if it goes down...

Plus you have to buy kit, that will cost around 500 quid. maybey more...

If you want cheap reliability for your first big bike, get a GS500E.
Sexy, cheap and they last.
But with your budget, even with gear, you can get a decent 400sports, but won't be fun if you mess it up.
Still, whatever you decide, enjoy it :>

Go for a GPZ500S or a GS500E Like already suggested, there nice and comfy for every day use, they are cheap to run and cheaper to insure than a 400 Sports Bike, The GPZ is also quite sporty anyway, it has a top fairing and IMO looks quite nice too.

You could get a 2002 GS500K1 for £2300 or a 2000 X Reg GPZ500 for the same too, alot lot newer than a 400 of the same price.

Also servicing will be cheaper, aswill part and there easier/quicker to get hold of than the parts on grey 400's!

Just my Penny Coin Penny Coin

Yer id say you could probably get a quote for less than 1500. Phone around, big time. Haggle between the two cheapest companys. Try ALL companies. The unheard company i used gave my the best quote by far.

Dont use the net, the quotes from there are crap.

im 19, and my insurance is 500 quid on a cbr400. I spoken to people your age, with insurance for 1000, so it is true.

I use my cbr4 gullarm to go to collage, fun, whatever. Although it is a bit much for long journeys; 1 1/2 hours, im quite happy to live with that as its such a good bike.

When I was 17 on my ER-5 the cheapest quote I found was £1100 TPFT from CIA Insurance.

Its now £297 on a GS500E, three years riding and being 3 years older makes a hell of a difference. Very Happy

Hey Craig, what kind of insurance do you think I'd be looking at for a GS500 at 18 with 1 years no claims?

At 18, with 0 years NCB, for my GS500E I am looking around the £700 figure.

Well I done a quote on Bennetts to see how much a GS500F would be with 1 years NCB, after being on my ped and it came to about £750. TPFT.

A GS500 is cheaper than an ER-5 to insure, and a GS is cheaper to service and run with it being air cooled rather than water cooled.

Plus the ER-5's engine is quite lumpy and crap compared to the GS's Razz

yes that is the NC30, no your not looking around £700

Will cost me £500 to be insured on one age 20 with 1 years no claims and living in a low crime area, so 18 with 0 no claims, then i would expect more than £700, more likely around £900-£1000
