Hi everyone,
Just looking for advice from those of you familiar with CG's. I have been having persistent issues with the odometer assembly on my bike. First off the drum would spin backwards at certain revs, presumably from vibrations and slack in the gears. I fixed that by placing a small washer on the odometer's shaft to keep the final drive wheel from shifting and disengaging with the 1/10 mile drum.
Also I've been getting problems when it comes to ticking over, sometimes every 10 miles, every 100 miles or even when it went over 30000 miles. The 1/10 wheel continues to spin but the 1 miles drum will not budge so I am guessing something is worn in there that is preventing one or more if the drums from turning.
I have taken it off the bike about a dozen times over the past few months trying to sort the problem but it persists. Even going so far as to disassemble the mechanism itself, with great care, and inspect the internal gubbins. I couldn't really see anything untoward and put everything back in its place after cleaning and giving each moving part a light smear of grease. Still no luck, even taking it out and manually ticking over it with stop and will force the previous wheel to slip and carry on turning without having ticked over the next one.
I am at the point now where I really want to replace the mechanism with one from another bike, likely one from a breakers. The thing is not many are the Brazil models like mine, mainly being the later BR's from 1995 onwards or beyond and have different-looking speedo assemblies to mine.
So my question is this, if I go for a part from a later bike would the ratio for the speedo and odometer likely be the same as mine? I know many things on the various generation of CG's stayed the same and are interchangeable but is the speedo assembly one of them? Would it be a simple case of counting teeth and hoping for th best?
Many thanks ____________________ Honda CB500s (1999) - Honda CG 125 BR-J (1991)
