'lo chaps

got the shock of my life this morning during the 5-second walk-round to discover that the main exhaust -> frame mounting bolt was AWOL.

So would some care to offer any suggestions as to how an M10 bolt with both spring and tab washers and a nylok nut done up to 50ft/lb could possibly manage to detach itself from said bike?

concerned timmeh is concerned.

ta Thumbs Up

Sheared and made its getaway?

Was it the original bolt? Has it been crashed?

It had a falling out with the frame.
You probably didn't give it enough love and attention.

Id certainly get it replaced darn quickly or you run the risk of shaking the whole exhaust off, by way of stress on the exhaust manifold studs to the block and that will be a mare to sort.

This ^^

The bolt may have had an internal flaw that caused it to fail.

That's what I'm thinking too.

Bolt was OEM mild steel. Time for a new one.

When I first got the TZR I noticed the exhaust hanger was missing, so I made my own using a spare CBR one I had and cut it down to size. Thank fcuk I did, it's prolly saved the zorst from coming off and taking half the engine with it.

Vibration is a serious issue on this bike. The engine runs smoothly enough except at low revs, however the suspension is rock hard so checking nuts and bolts is a regular occurance. I blame Norfolk's shitty roads. I might even consider lockwiring things together now.

I reckon a sheared bolt too, possibly weakened by fatigue from a bumpy ride or engine vibration.

It happened to my CBF125 as I rode to the dealer to sort out other "quality issues". It noticed it when I hit a speed bump, heard a clunk as the exhaust pipe fell on the swing arm. I stopped and found half a bolt on the road with the nut still attached, couldn't find the head.

I bodged the pipe back on with zip ties I carry under the seat, consider carrying some if you don't already.

theory #3

over time the heat from the zorst has caused the nylon to melt causing the old nut to shake out.

Now it has a stainless M10 with an all-metal stover nut and a couple of washers.

That'll hopefully stay put!

Ta for the replies dudes

Tbh, a stainless bolt can be more likely to fail from the fatigue of vibration than a mild steel one if it's a lot harder.

[paranoid] Someone was trying to steal the exhaust and got disturbed. [/paranoid].

It is now your duty to sleep with the bike to catch the culprit and use at least one of the suggestions made up by the BCF hard boys to hurt them.

If I caught anyone trying to nick my bikes, I would attach their skull to the national grid.

2 stroke exhausts resonate with high frequency vibration. Is it the original pipe or a spannie. If its original bolt it up like it came from the factory, would probably have some kind of rubber bush, check a parts fiche. If its a spannie it should be spring mounted at the exhaust port with a rubber mounting further down.

correct, the bolt fits through a rubber bush with a metal spacer inside. Which was still there, thankfully.

Don't really deal with much high temperature stuff at work so no idea about the nylon melting but if that is a possibility could you replace the nyloc with an aeronut?

Fairly sure the nylon from most Nyloc nuts can go up to about 250 Degrees.
