Look on Ad Trader for ones near you.

Theres a fair amount, you can even put a Kawasaki AR80cc Engine in, giving it 6 gears (insead of 5) and 10hp (even before you start to mod it!). However at 16 this would be pretty Illegal. Keeping the 50cc engine there are a fair few performance pipes, air filters and reeds that will imrpove the speed a tiny bit, but make it feel faster with a slightly more savage power delivery and louder exhaust note (also illegal but a good 70% of 50cc bikes being ridden by 16 year olds are like this)

To be honest, why not wait until your 17 and buy an old geared 125 two stroke, these are cheep, much faster than 50ccs, loads of fun, and will want lots of love and attention from their owners from time to time while not breaking the bank to have them repaired. The Kawasaki AR125 would be a good example of such a bike.

If youve made your mind up on 50ccs and are looking at an older geared bike, the AR50 is a good choice as its dead cheep, and the 80cc engine can be slotted in when you want more power. Its much the same with the Old Yamaha RD50MX's, which are very similar bikes to the AR and also have an 80cc cousin from which bigger engines can be sourced. Again its the same with the old DT50MX (which shares it's engine with the RD) so theres plenty of modding opotunities if your that way inclined.
Other cheep air cooled 50cc's include the TS (which is dead common with plenty of recent examples around) the MT50 (not as common as the TS but very similar) and the MB5 (which seems to be dead rare these days, but this one also has the possibility of 80cc engine transplants).

All the above bikes will be fun, will do just over 40mph stock and and will be easy and cheep to fix due to the simplicity of the mechanics. However they are gtting rarer now and after all these years of abuse the ones that are left are likelly to be on their last legs.

I say get a cheep 125 at 17 would be the best plan Thumbs Up

cheers for the advice i completely forgot about the RD.
the reason i want a 50cc geared bike its because i want to get confedent on gears so when im 17 i can take my test and ride 33bhp.
i also think it will make riding abit more fun round counrty lanes.

I suppose they start off as ped bois, meaning they go out and buy a moped at 16, but not any protective gear. Most will not progress onto a bigger/geared bike, as when they turn 17 they go out and buy a nova/corsa/xr2 and make it look shit, sorry, "baaaaaaad".

If they upgrade and buy a geared bike, even if it's only a 50cc, then it means they're commited to a future in biking, and that can only be a good thing Smile

Pah, I have an automatic and I will have to learn to use gears too if I want to pass the 33BHP test. Sad

I have a training session for free from the motorcycle training centre soon, because I took my CBT with them. Dance!

Yeah, the gears aren't that hard to get the hang of, well wasn't for me, but some people find things harder than others, id never ridden a geared bike before, but soon as i got on it came naturally (not being big headed) but it did, its all about confidence really, but dont get over confident or you mite be waking up in hospital Razz

safe riding, Steve.

Sorry to bring up an old(ish) post, gears are so easy to learn, i had never ridden a geared bike before and sat on a pals rs125 and within within 10 minutes i was hitting 85mph.

But maybe thats because i knew HOW to do it, but had never DONE it.

Wouldn't worry too much Marc, it had was just over 24 hours old, so not exactly an old thread. Razz

Gears are easy to learn, and with practice you will be able to do it with ease, managing to pull off isn't too hard (doing it smoothly is harder) and changing up gears is very easy, so managing to do 85mph doesn't really say very much.

If you're going to get a 125 or do your 33bhp test when you're 17 you are best of getting a geared 50cc so that you are more conifdent and experiences with using them when you turn 17 and get a 125 or do your test. They're not too hard to use, but using them correctly and smoothly and to test standard is the trick.
