Why is your first sentence fine, and the rest not?

It is always good to type into word, spell check, then copy and paste into the forum

a chevabull

Laughing That is classic!

Dyslexia aside I would say it's more than possible in 3 weeks and sounds like a good route. I'm planning something similar next year (scroll down to 'soloing the alps') so might see you Wink

If you do need a place to stop over there are loads of cheap places on here:

https://www.airbnb.co.uk/

The only thing I would say is don't try and cover too many miles in one day, Europe is an amazing place with some fantastic places to visit even if it's simply stopping for something to eat. Lake Como, Garda etc. are amazing as are Tuscany and Umbria - take your time and enjoy your trip !

Lucca worth a visit. Pisa, Florence and Siena are nice but can be very busy especially round the main tourist sites / museums.

Sometimes missing the French auto routes isn`t an option if you want to get somewhere fast and cover huge distances.
I`d avoid Pisa, I was there on the bike a couple of weeks ago. I had loads of hassle from the army of lucky boys flogging sunglasses etc. I also didn`t feel comfortable leaving the bike with them nearby. So I only stayed 10mins for the obligatory photo, I`ll probably leave Pisa for a time without the bike, when I can get a cheap flight in.
Outside of Florence I can recommend B&B Casa Sofia at Fiesole https://www.casadisofia.it/ up in the hills above Florence, & away from the bustle in town. The biggest hassle in/around Florence was trying to find somewhere to stay that had parking for the bike.
Another suggestion if your on the road between Pisa & Florence, is a visit to the Piaggio museum https://museopiaggio.it/ (closed on Mondays).
The stelvio pass I`d pass on, again I was there 2 weeks ago, and wasn`t impressed. Maybe its something that you have to do once, buy never again.
As for campsites, if you have GPS try downloading the Archiescampings POI`s

I presume you have never been to Italy by bike ????.If thats the case a few words of caution from a experienced biker who rides from the midlands down to Naples about 6 or 7 times a year .

The Italians are extremely intolarent of anyone holding them up,the further south you go the worse they are,if you are slowing constantly to look at road signs ,read maps ect be prepared to be bullied by car drivers who will be constantly using their horns and generally bullying you with their cars to go faster or get out of their way, this will be on ALL roads and for a new rider a nightmare in the cities and especially down the Amalphi coast.
August is holiday month in Italy, the whole country more or less closes down and is on the move,

I can only really talk with experience about the South ,Naples and the Amalphi coast in particular.
If you are looking for stunning views ,small beaches and warm seas then the SS145 from Naples towards Sorrento then follow signs for the SS 163 which will take you down to Salerno and beyond.
If you are looking for empty biking roads forget it,its crowded and extremely hot.

My advice would be not to come this far South unless you are prepared and have the riding experience to cope with constant 30 plus degree heat ,crowded roads and irate Italians.

Pompei is just North of Naples and well worth a visit ,again many tourists get caught out as Pompei is a huge site very open with no shade, and in summer extremely busy.

Also remember if your camping it will be extremely difficult to get anywhere in the South if you have not booked around the Amalphi coast ,
The country is not cheap ,so bring lots of Euro,
Do not eat or drink near touists spots, you will be ripped off, always move back about 2 Piazza's and prices get cheaper,
Do not bring any expensive jewellery ect, on Sunday in Naples a silly English woman had her Rolex snatched in Naple on Via TOLEDO ,the main shopping street iN Naples.

How do i know all the above ????.
As i said i ride up and down to Naples about 5 or 6 times a year ,my wifes Italian ,we have a appartment down here in Naples and a holiday appartment on the Amalphi coast ,

Anyway if you have any specific biking or question related to here in the South please ask,

I would suggest you avoid the coastal roads around Northern Italy - I thought they would be great from when I was a 16 year old passenger in a car there. Turns out it was too like the UK - lots of towns with teeny bits of fun inbetween.

For Alpine riding, Switzerland was better than Italy. I did the St Bernard pass and the road on the Swiss side was in a fair bit better state - and general riding around back roads in Switzerland was pretty good, while I ended up sticking to the motorway through a fair bit of Italy (though some of the motorway would have been fun if doing 120mph or more.

Another Italian touring book suggestion, Italia in moto (50 itinerari)
Publisher: TOURING CLUB ITALIANO
ISBN/EAN: 9788836559145
https://www.deastore.com/libro/italia-in-moto-50-itinerari-touring/9788836559145.html (this is where I got my copy).
Or from https://www.amazon.co.uk/Italia-itinerari-scritti-sperimentati-motociclisti/dp/883655914X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375255689&sr=8-1&keywords=9788836559145
Yes it is in Italian, but is understandable, (I don`t speak/read Italian, but I can make sense of it) it comes with simple separate map cards for each of the suggested routes in the book, & places to see along the way. The routes link up thru routes 1-50 so it would be easy to join a couple up for a full days riding.

I`d also suggest getting copies of the (regional) Michelin maps (numbers 561,562,563, & 564) for Italy, mapsman.com, Amazon etc will have up to date versions. Also the ADAC maps are another suggestion

I guess its down to personnel choice, but a book that size is probably designed for car touring & will take quite some space up in the luggage on a bike, especially if 2-up.
Where as traditional fold up maps such as Michelin can be secreted in jacket pockets etc.
Likewise the map scale you use, is probably more important than anything, & I`m guessing the scale on the book you have may not show local roads in detail. Where as the Michelin maps come in National, Regional, & Local map scales

likewise there are other maps which are tailored towards motorcycles, the "motorrad generalkarte" series for Germany is a classic example of laminated maps specifically designed for motorcycle touring

avoid naples, it's where my family is from, and you're likely to be robbed in some way or another, and it's dirty. i haven't been for a few years now, so it might be different, but i doubt it a lot. the last trip i planned to go there they closed the airport due to a gang war which got a bit out of hand compared to usual.

instead of going to naples, schedule a visit to sorrento and positano on the amalfi part of your trip ... pompeii is well worth a visit, as is vesuvio..

interesting observation... i've found it to be the opposite.. i find drivers in the north to be foaming at the mouth at absolutely everything. even if theyve come sliding out of a side street into your path, which was obviously your fault... Smile

i find in the south, and the further south you go, including sicily, the more relaxed they are. you still get the same thing of 4 cars side by side in a 2 lane autostrada edging past eachother.. and you still get horn blasts.. but it's rarer to get shouted at, or for people to break into a fight in the road over who's right of way it is. in fact i've seen people t-bone another car and the drivers just get onto the roof and sit there making phonecalls smiling and laughing (though this is obviously not the usual response)

we have come up with a defiant rough and got some bad news about the bike
bike first gsr600, all the givi paniers stuff turned up (second hand) and it dose not fit as i do not have the stander exhaust, we got the top box on well 1/2 on took the grab handle off and fitted it with out the supports and there's not inuff room on it for the 2 of us to be confabulate,
so been looking on ebay and we going 2 get an old tourer around £2000 to £3000, just for the trip and if we like touring will get a new tourer but if we don't like touring we should be a bull 2 sell the old bike for what we paid for it and just stick 2 days out in on the bike,
new rough
Plymouth- Roscoff- Rennes- Angers- Bourges - Macon - Chamonix- Mont Blanc- lake Como - Bormeo - Selvio pass - Merano s44- Vipiteno Stersing - Brunico -ss48 - lake Garda
Verona - bologna - Florence - Pisa ss1- Genoa - Monaco - Nice - Canes - Sant tropes - Pergigana n116 - Alp - n260 - n240 - Pompola - Santander - Plymouth
still a 3 week time
this rough give us some more time off the bike to take in sights and stuff
