I'm about to remove the ignition switch on my old honda cb125 and make a permanent connection for the lights and permanently disconnect the ignition coil bypass.

Am I right in thinking that as long as I remember to turn the lights off the battery will not drain when the bike is left overnight.

What are the risks of doing this - other than someone nicking my bike because it will always start straight off the kick without a key?

Am I missing something really dumb here?

Why do this?

I can't see of any immediate reasons for power being drained. What you should do it turn the ignition on, the lights off and then measure circuit draw from the battery. If it matches the draw with the ignition off then you're golden.

Personally if removing the ignition switch, I would just wire in another switch that doesn't require the key.

Make it easier to steal and probably invalidate your insurance of you were to claim it was stolen... Laughing

My ignition switch is broken and the mounting has always bugged me so I figured I would just get rid of it. I always lock the bike up anyway so I don't need it.

I thought about wiring a new switch but I cant find any decent weather resistant switches - any ideas on that let me know too!

Good suggestion - I'll get the magic calculator out and measure the draw in the morning.

I couldn't think of any reasons it would drain either - can anyone else?

Buy pit bike killswitch. It is how my TTR600 was wired.

Very good point on the insurance - although I bought it for £50 so it wouldn't bother me that much. It's just a toy at the moment really.

Surely that is a 'momentary switch' so it wont stay on?

Either on or off, no middle ground.

A kill switch would be fine. Wire ignition wires through kill switch. Mount kill switch on handlebars.

No probs Thumbs Up

I'd be quite wary though, if you work out cost of bike, parts you buy and insurance it does add up and makes someone stealing it mean you are significantly out of pocket.

Thanks Paddy, you're right I may be being a little inpatient. I've spent a lot of time tinkering with this bike and I would miss it if only for that. I'll take a look at a few more options before I make my decision. Thumbs Up

I'd personally* check eBay for a used replacement. Should be able to find a good/working one cheaply.

* He says, when in reality his own bike doesn't have an ignition.
