I've just spotted a TU250X, never seen one before and I quite liked the look of it. So, how does it compare?

I'm currently on a 2012 CBF125 and I've seen a ' 98 TU.

Based on a few videos I've seen (all appear to be of 2008 onwards versions of the TU) it's not going to give twice the power, although I presume getting up to similar speeds would be a bit quicker on the TU than the CBF. I'd also guess that the 250 might be able to push my lardy body more easily. The TU seems to offer 80mpg which is worse that the CBF but that's an acceptable loss imho

Have advances in technology between 1998 as 2012 (FI etc) tipped the balance in any way?

Can you consider a 250 to be like a 125 but it doesn't slow to a crawl when it meets a hill?

Opinions on the TU?

A bit more torque and relaxed cruising at say 70mph I would say than a CBF125? It shares the same engine with the old GN250, which was a 22hp single though with fuel injection added since 2005 when it became the TU250X - the '98 one you've seen must be a TU250 'Volty'. 250's do generally feel a bit more gutsy than 125s, I'd imagine you'd notice a fair bit more pull particularly up hills and into headwinds where you'll notice the difference.

In this case, I would say that's a pretty good way to consider them; I've no experience of the TU, but the old GN was a bit of a plodder, although like most 4T singles, the bigger you go the more torque you get, so the TU won't be any road burner, but when it comes to gradients, it will still be pulling where your CB has run out of steam.

As for technology, I'm gonna vote for old skool carbs.

FI will give you better economy and a cleaner throttle response (although a well set up carb won't be far behind) but when it breaks, there are potentially expensive injectors/sensors/ECUs to replace, plus you need some kit to work out what's actually failed, or the money to pay someone else to work it out for you.

Carbs can be fixed with a screwdriver and a spanner.

Worth thinking about, if you're working to a tightish budget.
