Bike - YZF-R1 2001, miles 20k

Came back yesterday after a 10 mile ride on the R1(first ride since I bought it) the clutch was slipping a little bit, so came home, in the last 2 miles the bike had a little ticking noise, similar to the CCT being a little loose.

Then this morning, I went to adjust the clutch cable as I thought that might help with the slipping clutch. I was going to take it for a test, then when I started it up this noise surprised me a little. Any ideas???

Fuck.... That doesn't sound pleasant.

I hope it's not a big end.

First thing to determine if a big end is to increase the rpm slowly to about 5k then let it run back to idle by letting go the throttle.
You will only really hear a big end 'knock' when the conrod is not under load. ie induction cycle.
Big ends tend to make a lighter 'knock' than the worser main 'knock'
But more pronounced than a tappet/timing chain rattle.

On the other hand and MUCH worse too is... it could be a crankshaft main bearing, which has a characteristic CLATTER which doesn't really go away if rpm/load is changed.

The other thing to do is pull the oil filter and cut it open.
The noise that engine is making should mean the filter will be polluted with white metal. Or should be and some cnut has changed it.

There should be NO metal visible to the naked eye in an oil filter from a normal engine (after run in or repair there may be slight traces).

Good luck.

BTW Don't use that bike untill you sort out what the noise is.
The engine could catastrophically fail and lock up the back end. Or fire bits into the radiator etc.

Thanks for the advice, I may whip the oil filter off. I tried the up to 5k revs and back down, and no knock at all just the weird whizzing noise.

As an update, I called a workshop to see what they thought and they said it could be a stuck camchain, they even suggested riding it round the block, I gave it a 150M ride after warming it up to 60 degrees, when I accelerate, the sound does go away, when I pull the clutch in and slow down it comes back again, then when I pulled back in the oil warning light came on, even though it has oil in it, do oil pumps go?

I will take it up to them on Saturday to have a listen as they put it. So frustrating!

my 2p worth ....that sounds like cct to me .. those motors are noted for it.. I would be takin the lower camchain sprocket cover off and pushin the guides & chain wit me finger to see how much play there was.. takin the cct off and on seein wot difference it made.

the oil light is not pressure triggered but is a low level warning light...
its possible the float switch mechanism wants a clean....
gooogle it time ...

Cheers for the advice, it's going into the shop on Saturday, my heart is now at ease a lot more as this seems quite common with these models.

Hopefully it wont cost a lot to fix, it's eating into my savings and holiday fund and the Mrs isn't happy Laughing
