Dear all,

Following the ethernet advice I received here, (thanks btw) the house, which is currently under renovation, now has Cat6 cables run from every room to a central cupboard, where I will, in time, add the network switch and patch panel.

As he was at it, the electrician 'helpfully' also ran 'shotgun' co-ax cable (so two co-ax cables bonded together) from every room also to the same cupboard. I am now wondering what to do about TV. I will almost certainly continue my Sky HD subscription (there're no fibre-optic options in the village and broadband is currently 2-3 Mbps tops). Obviously I need to get a Sky signal from outside the house to each room. I was wondering if you could 'patch' co-ax like you can with the ethernet, so run a load of co-ax from the roof area (to connect to a Sky LNB) to the central cupboard, from where I can redirect it to whatever room is necessary.

There was talk of actually housing the Sky box in the cupboard, then sending the output via HDMI-over-ethernet. The trouble I have with this is that I like to run a separate sound system off of the Sky output, with an optical link. Also, this would take up two ethernet cables to the room, leaving fewer (or none) free for other devices. Hence I think I would prefer that any room that has a TV in it will also have a Sky box with it, hence the thought about patching the satellite feed directly to the rooms.

There is also the matter of aerial-fed TV (Freeview) - can I run an aerial feed to the cupboard and patch this?

OR...

...is there some fancy TV/AV distribution box gadget thing I could house in the cupboard and use to distribute whatever source to whatever room?

What I aim to achieve is the ability to have a Sky box (or other satellite decoder box, eg Freesat) in any room of the house OR a Freeview source (which the TV can decode). A standard Sky LNB has 4 feeds, but I gather you can go up to 8-feed LNBs, which offers all sorts of options for dual- or single-feed decoder boxes.
