Afternoon,

Right so my rad fan isnt coming on. If i unplug the thermo switch and connect the wire to earth the fan comes on.

So this would suggest the thermo switch isnt working right? Well ive tried 3 switches, the original, one from a friend who said it was from his working bike, and one i bought from dave silvers new last week. And its still not working.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Test your thermostat and also check your coolant level.

This has been going on for over a year btw.

Coolant has been changed and is full

I had a new thermostat fitted but the old one is still working fine.

The bike stays around 75c while im riding but soon gets up to 100c while im in town <30mph. And will get to 120c and shut off if im stuck in heavy traffic etc.

The thermo switch should close around 98-102c

Call me auld fashioned if you want but... Remove the thermo-switch and put it in a pot of water with a 0-100+°C thermometer. Connect an AVO-meter to the terminal/s and boil the pot of water. When the switch closes you will see the Ohms value change. Note the temperature on the thermometer.
If it doesn't 'operate' at 100°C chuck it out and buy a new one.
Tip: Chances are the switch is gubbed. They don't cost an arm and a leg and since you have to drain the coolant to get it out you may as well have a new one on-hand.... Smile

Maybe beg the dealer for sale or return (un-used or any seal un-broken). They may be cuntish and say no or less cuntish and say yes but charge handling. But if half decent they will help as the cost of a switch ain't gunna keep their lights on or their door open but may encourage you to boost their rap sheet for them. Cool

Have you tried wiring the fan direct to the battery to make sure that's working? If so then work back from there making sure all connections are secure etc.

Just what I would do if I had that problem... but I have no clue about these things

@Walloper,

The 2nd switch i tried i tested as you described and it was working fine, but when that didnt work i still bought a new switch from dave silvers which cost £65 so not cheap but its still not working.

@andy,

If i bypass the switch the fan comes on and works fine, so the only thing i think it can be is either all the switches are not working or maybe the rad isnt grounded properly?

Quick fix if you don't have time to check, connect fan to switch on handle bars. This way you can turn it on.

Single wire switch? Surely you have an earth problem, run a wire next to the switch straight to the negtive terminal on the battery and see what happens.

Earth problem X2.
Follow the circuit through with your meter.

If the rad is earthed correctly (easy to check with your multimeter) then the only other option is the stat simply isn't being heated enough in which case you may have a partial blockage in the rad...

In which case get it off, partially fill it then tip it around a lot then drain. Then flush in both directions with a garden hose before refitting and refilling.

Do you have a workshop manual with a useable wiring diagram? If so,trace the wiring circuit for the fan.Does part of the wiring that goes to the dash display go via a large multi-pin connector under one of the body panels. If so,check for any corrosion within that connector.

On the fan circuits for my old Exup there is a separate fan switch that cuts in at the required temperature. But this is integrated into a differant switching circuit via a relay on my R1,which is also fused. If you have the manual, see if yours is switched by similar circuitry.

The rad has been off and checked/ flushed when i had my new exhaust system fitted last month. Its definitely getting hot by the switch.

I'll attach the wiring diagrams etc so you can see (hopefully as its a pic from the haynes with my phone) If you open them in a separate window you can zoom in on them and see a lot better

if i disconnect the fan switch connector and touch it to the earth wire coming from the fuse box it starts up

im thinking its probably a break in this cable?

Ill go check it when it stops raining.

Im useless with electrics as you can probably tell Laughing

From that wiring diagram it does look as though fuse #5 is for the fan switching.

And as you have found the fan switch itself on the picture page I would be placing a direct wire across the terminals of the switch and checking if the fan operates.

Sorted it.

It was a bad earth connection, on the pic above with the red circle, that earth wire wasn't grounding the rad properly.
All i had to do was undo the screw and put the wire the other side of the fan bracket and its working fine now.

Thanks for all the replies Thumbs Up
