'Ridiculous' laws leave young bikers at risk

My son Chris is in this Channel TV news story - his foot was crushed by a Volvo which also wrote-off his Reiju RS 125.

"Other grey areas include no requirement for a rider to pass their theory test before applying for a provisional licence and no requirement for a rider to pass their final practical test after completing compulsory basic training - in these cases riders opt to top up their provisional licence every two years."

That's identical to here in the 21st Century. I'm not sure what's 'grey' about that.

More pedestrians get run over and killed on Gurnsey than motorcyclists who crash and die.

Maybe they should look at their priorities and tighten up on jaywalkers?

'Laws that allow young motorcyclists to ride powerful racing bikes on provisional licences'

'Gaps in the law mean that a 18-year-old on a provisional licence could ride a racing bike capable of doing nearly 200mph.'

Is this really true

So, even if Chris were covered by laws matching the rest of Europe he could've still been on the same 125? And you want big bikes banned for youngsters why?

I also posted in the other thread but I'll bite here also.

I don't really understand in what sense this is true.

To me, it's akin to saying that, because me walking on a clifftop is legal - the law puts ramblers at risk.

It's just, well, odd. Youngsters are perfectly free to pick tame bikes to start off with, and also to wind the throttle on gradually as they progress. That's what I did.

My old Flatmates missus was from guernsey.

Basically with a CBT she could ride a hayabusa with L plates for 2 years IIRC.

Do they?

Or do the bikers put themselves at risk?

As far as I know, nowhere on the island has a speed limit over 35mph.

I can see why they might not bother with all the funky licensing stuff we have.

I think the instructor can see a market expansion if there is a law change. Smile
