Hello
Local Lidl has an arc welder for sale at £40.
Don't know much about welders, and would be useful for fixing things - such as centre stand on one of my GPz550 came broke - would one of these be suitable to weld the parts together?

It's OK, I've got one from a few years back. Good for thick stuff (but obviously not really thick), not so good for thin stuff.

Better warranty than you'll get elsewhere for that money. It'll be fine for a stand, but you will need some scrap to practice on first.

I would recommend getting a MIG welder. Easy to use and require more or less no practise. A good DIY 140amp one will set you back around £140 from eBay. You get what you pay for.

By that logic, buy a high frequency one for £2k.

Sorry but don't quite get you. I use welders a fair bit at work and Im just saying i have found the best one for bike repairs and home projects are MIG welders. The current is really down to what you intend to weld and with welders you buy a cheep one it might not hold up when doing a fair bit of work, a really expensive industrial one would be able to weld all day everyday. But obviously for the home and DIY mechanic a really expensive welder would not be needed as its not going to be used a large amount.

Be fine for a quick stitch..nothing else..for thin stuff.. Oerlikon Fincord rods..bang on. Might want to train your hand before attempting thin stuff with stick..a dying art.
Thinner rods=lower amps
Sod gasless mig...smoke city..

Thanks for the advice - gone and bought it, - might look out if there are any night classes to teach how to weld. Didn't want to spend much on something that I might not use much.

I agree with Roger. If you took the handle off the top it'd make a perfect stand.
