Just got a new monitor delivered today... not sure if I like this ultra wide or not yet. I bought it for the extra work space, which it certainly does look good. It has some software with it for splitting it up in to 8 sections if you want, or different variations.

One cool feature is the dual link, can split in 2 and have the PC on one side and laptop on the other or another PC on the same screen. Also has an MHL port for hooking up your phone/tablet to it.

Old Setup:

Acer 18" - Emails/Skype/Facebook
ASUS 27" 3D 144hz (1920x1080) Gaming
Samsung 24" Syncmaster (1920x1080) Work

https://i.imgur.com/nGNrVkK.jpg

New Setup:

LG 29" Ultra Wide IPS LED 21:9 ( 2560x1080 ) Work
ASUS 27" 3D 144hz (1920x1080) Gaming

Ok for starting with where is the clutter & shit
its not healthy having a clean work space

how much was the new one, I like the features you described for splitting
would be handy for my laptop to hook up to as well as my PC

I'm curious about what the little display on your keyboard is for.

looks like a logitech g19.

the screen can be used with the relevant game/app plugins to display various things from game stats (ammo, armour etc) to system temps/weather/time.

i use the g15 which is the original model Smile

as to the display setup..its pretty cool. i use a dell u2412m as my main screen and a 2007wfp in portrait on the left for my laptop.

mousewithoutborders ftw Thumbs Up

I don't like having a messy desk, it distracts me and makes me feel like I'm un-organised if there's shit everywhere.

The display on the keyboard does some nifty, albeit fairly useless, stuff like loading RSS feeds (actually pretty useful), checks email accounts and displays new messages and the one I have it set to the most is the CPU/memory usage meter. I wanted something able to record macros easily and it has 18 assignable keys for them, which I use all the time.

Anyway, the monitor... considering that is an ASUS 27" monitor next to it and the LG is a 29", it's lost about 3 inches in height but gained the extra sideways. With the large resolution, it's very good with work space. I can have Dreamweaver open on the left and site on the right. Main thing is everything fits on my screen without scrolling.

I design website layouts in Photoshop and having the full working area on screen, with all the tools open as well is a nice thing.

Question is, would I be better off with a normal sized monitor, almost the same as the ASUS I already have but higher resolution and better IPS/PLS display.

https://www.asus.com/Commercial_Monitors_Projectors/PB278Q/

The ASUS I have was bought for gaming mostly, I never really intended to use it for everyday use.

I really like the extra wideness of that LG screen. I have a couple of Acer 223w's connected to my macbook pro, but 2 of those LG screens would be really nice. Going back to one, even two screens is quite hard once you get into the habbit of splitting stuff up onto various screens. I have all my comms on the right, browser on left and do development on the centre screen. Then if I don't want to be disturbed by irc, email etc I just turn the sound off and switch off the right hand screen.

My setup..

No way of going back once you have multi screen setups, it just doesn't feel right!

I can watch movies in 21:9 on this LG now but I didn't buy it for that, I have a 3D 1080p projector for films to the left.

Split screens:

From left to right:

Illustrator CS6 | Photoshop CS6 | Chrome | Photoshop Extension

The split screen is nothing more than a pimped up version of what Windows 7 does anyway when you hit the Windows Key + keypad left/right... it just remembers the configs and let's you do it with one click in different combos.

I'm digging this screen now actually. Even though I've been thinking about why didn't I get another 27" ASUS but 2560x resolution and IPS panel, I like the ultra wide area on this allot after using it for a few hours.

Once I find a bigger desk, will put the Samsung on the left.

I've changed my mind completely now. Although the screen is superb, I just can't deal with the loss in height. It's about 3 inches smaller than my ASUS and the resolution is annoying me.

2560x1080 on the LG with 29" screen.

2560x1440 on 27" can be had on https://www.asus.com/Commercial_Monitors_Projectors/PB278Q/

It would match my other ASUS in size and look but provide a much higher resolution and more space vertically.

The ultra wide screen on the LG is also a bit impractical with games (not a lot support it) and video content, like iPlayer/4od etc, plus normal movies, you need one shot in 21:9 or more to get the right angle, other wise it looks a bit stretched.

The other massive fail is the stand isn't adjustable in height, only tilts back and forward a little. The ASUS adjusts height, as well as pivoting to a vertical position (handy for coding).

RMA submitted and accepted, going to order the ASUS instead. Maybe if you work with databases/spreadsheets etc or just want a lot of horizontal space, it would be fantastic but it's just bugging me.

that's not ultra wide, my old setup of 5760x1080 (triple 24") was ultra wide Very Happy

now they're in portrait, 3240x1920, works out almost the same as one massive tv, but without the blockyness(and with a minor issue of some bezels, but they're easy to live with)

It's ultra wide for 1 monitor!

I requested an RMA before and it's been accepted, ready to go back Monday.

Will get that ASUS one instead.

Right, the monitor has been returned and I've been refunded. Anyone got any suggestions for a replacement?

Has to have a couple of things:

2560x1080 at least (1440 preferred)
IPS/PLS LED screen
27"
No more than £500

I've been swaying towards this: https://www.asus.com/Commercial_Monitors_Projectors/PB278Q/

Going to order a monitor on Monday, just have to decide if there's anything that can beat the ASUS.

Haha, so funny, tries to get one up on chatfogs, chatfogs don't give a fuck and just start being extra offensive to him, and everyone has carried on as normal.

The thing I don't understand is what he is trying to achieve exactly, I mean what is he going to do with the logs, because no one really cared about Cansas logs Laughing Laughing what a gammon slipper

The fact that people use different size monitors makes uneasy.

I have to have the same monitors and will spend a fair about of time calibrating them making sure they are the same colour.

Ooooh I like the ultra wide, good for Lightroom - what does the length measure from the 29" diagonal?

If I'd set out to have 3 monitors, they'd all be the same size, but my setup kinda evolved through buying a new one and thinking it was a waste to stop using the old one, and then repeating the process a couple of years later, ending up with 3.

Forward planning fail, but a recycling win, I think.

Different purposes though. Doesn't bother me that they would be different, I can only focus on 1 at a time anyway!

Had a good look over the weekend and couldn't find anything that could match the spec of the ASUS for £500.

Arrived this morning and so glad I sent the LG back to replace with this, even though it was £100 more, it was worth it.

It's a fantastic monitor. Super sharp, contrast is excellent and the resolution is taking a bit of getting used to.

Left ASUS = 2560x1440 60hz
Right ASUS = 1920x1080 144hz

The difference in resolution just looking at both screens, is astounding. Considering the purpose of the monitor, it will definitely make me far more productive when designing and then pivoting it around to portrait for code.

Shame that 3D can't go past the 1920x1080 mark on the right monitor as when using it for normal desktop activities, the resolution feels too big for the screen size but I bought it for gaming and it excels at that with the massive 144hz so I'm happy now.

The LG was also superb but it needs another couple of years before content is being released on a large scale for that format. It would be a bit like owning a 4K monitor now, there's not much point until the content arrives.
