Hi guys,
I viewed a bike today and everything seemed pretty good, I am a newbie so I may have missed some things but overall the bike seemed in decent condition.
The one worry I have was the bike was a little wet around this area (see red circle).
The wetness was on the top of the centre stand, the floor below was dry and it wasn't dripping.

*Not actual picture of the bike.
He said it was because it hadn't been used in almost a year and he oiled the chain ready for it's MOT (Passed, 2 advisory's which are chain and sprocket).
Now worse case scenario, what else could that be and how much would it be to fix? ____________________ Honda CG 125 04' Blue |

Chain oil fling from front sprocket, most likely.
Here's how the same area on my Ninja looked earlier.

Worse. Imagine car oil that hasn't been changed in 50k miles, thick black horrible sludgy shit, it was caked on the inside about an inch thick. I thought about taking a picture but it was all over my hands before I'd even got all the screws out. Mental. ____________________ ZX-6R G2

It might be nothing, ask him to take that cover off, clean it with a rag and then take it for test ride and then take the cover off again and check it.
Also, you can take it, and I don't know how the inherent defect works in the UK, but here if anything that was not obvious the moment you singned the contract, goes wrong in 6 months period from the date of your signature, then it's considered as a inherent defect and the seller is responsible for the damage. If something like this works in the UK then I'd take it
EDIT: I've just sold my bike, so I hope it'll be alright long enough, I checked everything I could, well it's 23yrs old ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Best Case = Oil Fling from chain.
Worst Case = Knackered Out-Put shaft seal & Gear-box bearings.
Best Case isn't too heartening; if oil is dripping from the excess fling, then probably not used propper chain oil thats designed not to fling, but possibly old engine oil.. its better than nowt I suppose, but doesn't really suggest diligent mechanical attentions! Check more carefully elsewhere for other bodges or omissions in maintenance.
Cure: Half hour with the spanners, a rag, some de-greaser and proper chain oil to clean and re-do the chain tension & lube.
Worst Case - and actually not that unlikely; if old and or high miles, then the gear-box bearings will have worn, and so will the output shaft seal, and as bearings wear more, so the free-play in worn bearings means the shaft moved more, so more wear on the seal... which will start to 'tell' by weeping engine oil...... Problem may also be propagated by over enthusiastic maintenence, over tightening the chain tension too often, though Chain is the weak link and will usually stretch under the strain, can load up bearings.
Cure: Complete engine tear-down. There is a bodge to 'just' replace worn gear-box seals from the engine cases from the outside, screwing an old wood screw in from outside and yanking... but tapping new seal over the shaft into rebate, risk of damaging new seal worse than old was is high, and I have yet to discover one so fitted that has seated properly and not leaked early. Propper way to renew the seal, demands the engine taken to bits, so you can tap the old seal out from inside and drift and seat a new one, without shafts or anything in the way. And while you are in there, you ought to be inspecting the bearings for wear, and renewing is needed, as if excess shaft play made the old seal fail... no point fitting a new one just to have shaft play bugger that too.
Worry Factor: If there's no seriouse sign of an oil leak, a bit of weepage is tolerable. Not nice, but not too worry some, and an old bike can go many miles weeping a little lube, just getting topped up regularly. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
