The simple solution will be to purchase breakdown cover from any company other than the AA. Over time that should see them put out of business if they continue to accept stazi powers.

Seriously, this country is becoming more and more of a nazi shithole with every year that passes.

Feels a touch ironic considering that the 'Automobile Association' was originally created to assist motorists avoid police speed traps...

AA, you won't be getting any more of my money if you think this is acceptable. Middle Finger

I think I'll be going with the RAC at renewal.

Seems to be a move towards the American system where you get "mall cops" etc - which I believe do have more power than their British counterparts.

Does not make sense on some levels as it leaves the police budget to deal with more important matters.

But, also opens up even more avenues to abuse, of course.

"To our members we're the 4th emergency service". Yeah, and one of the other three as well now eh.

Any AA member who gets grassed up by an AA Patrol will instantly cancel their membership. I assume, therefore, that the police will be paying the AA for their services, otherwise it's commercial suicide. Either this will fizzle out as the AA recognise it's costing them all their credibility, or its the thin end of the wedge that ends with a fully privatised traffic police division.

AA man "I think you have committed a motoring offence, give me your name and address"
Le Me "Do you know who I am?
AA Man "No I do not"
Le Me " Good, as this isn't my car/bike, goodbye"

Proceed on as normal, if you get pulled over by police deny all knowledge of it and that you have never seen the AA man before in your life.

I think if, like the article says, to report people for wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones, let them. I'd like to be able to report someone for using their phones. The number on the M62 with iPhone in hand on saturday afternoon was outrageous.

As for anything more "serious" leave it to the cops

Thinking sounds like a slippery slope to me. This 2002 Police Reform Act does sound like a money saving exercise rather than a help to the law.

Neighbourhood warden schemes are being given similar powers to help them deal with anti-social residents, as are security guards on university campuses...
Thin end of the wedge starts here.

There's that wedge thing again. What other 'mundane' tasks will be given to the private sector?

"Oh! your motorcycle has been stolen and is being ridden dangerously. I'm sorry that's too trivial for the the police now, please pay Stazi Security Services for any help you want" Mad

I did see...

So that's ok then. If they help you you're exempt. Yet AA staff are paid to assist all AA members. So all AA members should be exempt. Sounds like the clique to join.

I think they're taking the whole "Fourth emergency service" tagline a bit too far aren't they?

It's hardly 'police powers'.... If you think about whenever they attend a call they get your name and address anyway from the paperwork.
They aren't going to be able to stop motorists and there won't be an offence for failure to stop for the AA, seriously that's crazy.
I doubt it would even cover Anti Social Behaviour with regards to name and address which is covered by Section 50 of mentioned Police Reform Act.

It would be interesting to see the first court case of an AA patrolman reporting to the police a driver on their mobile phone, without the POLICE officers statement it would get laughed out, no mention in the blog of AA being given professional witness status.

Curious how you'll make your getaway.. Considering you would have called the aa as you have broken down, they will also already know your details as you confirmed them over the phone when asking for assistance... Then they have your licence plate and a description of the user committing the offence after they have turned up.

But where is the problem? Surely you're not going around breaking the laws of the land by speeding everywhere Wink

The thin end of the wedge was Plastic Plod, "P"CSOs.

Once that line was blurred between a warranted constable and some clown in a Police-lite costume, it was inevitable that policing would be outsourced to the lowest bidders with a hi-vis and a notebook.

Good to see they'll be trained in "conflict resolution" and "diversity" though. Thumbs Up

Eh, laugh it off, is anyone going to be convicted for failing to supply ze papers to AA Andy? Really?

If so, then it needs to be an offence to impersonate not just coppers, but Plastics and AA monkeys and anyone else that they've seen fit to empower with authoro-tah.
