Just after a bit of information from people who have done it.

How many hours should I be looking to do? I have read at least 120 is needed realistically. This seems to be 20 hours in the classroom and 100 hours online.

I'm also a bit confused as to what accreditation I should ensure the course provider has, there are so many providers and accreditation's out there it is bloody mind numbing.

I would also be possibly looking to do a degree after the course if that makes any difference to what I should be going for.

Any help or advice would be amazing.

my suggestion on this would be to work the problem from the end to the begining,

ie, find out what qualifications the (good) schools require, then what you need to get them

tefl was something me and the wife considered a while ago, and then it was easy, and you could bumble your way around from school to school

now it seems that the schools are being a bit more selective as they have a whole generation of english speakers locally and more investment from outside business's looking for call center staff etc

Bit tricky as I'm not sure where exactly I will end up looking for work. It will most likely be in South East Asia though.

I will have a look.

There is Trinity and Cambridge. I currently work as a trainer for CELTA rookies. CELTA is more recognised.

Anything on-line is WORTHLESS anything which can be done in less than 3 days is worthless.

Costs about £1400 for a one month intensive course, that's having to go and attend classes.

Anything which has a 100% pass rate is also worthless.

Its not really useful unless you are going for a teaching qualification like a PGCE/DTTLS. As a TEFL qualification allows you to skip over one module of PTTLS (PTTLS is level 4 CELTA is 5).

This doesn't really mean much though as PTTLS isn't exactly difficult its a 15 minute teach on a subject of your choosing and a 2500 work report, reflection essay and critical reflection.

While for other courses it just proves your English is up to scratch... (you can just show them your GCSEs). But again this depends on what university you go to! Most will give you a conditional offer and tell you to study at a partner college to get your level 2.

(Note level 1 - SATs l2- GCSE L3 -Alevel , L4/L5 Undergraduate L6 Post grad, L7 MA level L7 Phd)

Anyway do the undegrad degree first then any qualification. A lot can change in 3 years.SOV.

I did the Trinity Cert TESOL at Chichester University, it was a three month intensive course (can't remember the cost now), and its an internationally recognised course. I was accepted on the back of that certificate at a school in Sulawesi and two schools in Greece. A colleague on the same course went to China and works in Shanghai and another works in Brighton at a language school. I don't know about the others.

On the other hand, if by S E Asia you mean Vietnam, I met loads of people teaching English with nothing more than "Its my first language" as a qualification. The more stringent places wanted a degree (in anything).

I met a guy with a degree in Engineering and an Irish accent that would strip paint off a barn door, getting paid good money (by their standards) to teach English.

Yep, I'm in China now teaching English.

Very few here are NES or have a degree. I work with a Ukrainian student, an Italian and 2 old NES's without degrees or certs.

They still keep hiring Ukrainian students, on the same wage as me. Which is why I now teach in jeans, t-shirt, farming boots and shaved my head a day or two ago.

I know a Bulgarian who teaches English, and his English is appalling. Fluent, but appalling.

To be fair, I see next to no difference in wage or salary between those with teaching Certs, and those without. Especially not Mickey-mouse online ones, which is why I still don't have one after 3 years and nearly 10 different teaching positions. At best they get your foot in the door.

Oh, and there are PLENTY of ghetto jobs about in rural hell holes that only require you are white and have a pulse.

But, if you actually want a stable long-term job in a nice place to live, at a high-end school, it might be worth the investment.

Oh, and women are in high demand. Men hate working with kids. If you're willing to teach young kids you can walk in to a job anywhere with a bit of confidence.

Do you need to be able to speak the foreign language as well? Or did those of you going out there pick it up as you went along?

Just wondering, in case I ever decide to do something like this myself hehe Smile

The people I met didn't speak the language at all. They had "assistants", who seemed to be the actual teachers, who spoke to the class, and the role of the english speaker was to give the correct pronunciations. Bit of a weird setup to be honest.

I have no idea if thats the general way it works.

Very unusual, and counter-productive.

We aren't meant to use the native language at all, and should only be working with upper-intermediate and above. And in theory should not have to do any grammar teaching... we are there to instantly know, 100%, if they said something wrong or right.

Of course, I actually learn most of my language skills (or at least hone them) in the classroom. The students love it, if used judiciously. But it's by no means necessary, or expected. Christ, most of the foreigners I've met (in any country) can barely count to 10.

Well I am even more confused now Laughing

Bonny - If I wanted a proper long term teaching job could I get away with doing the TEFL course? Or would your advise going straight for a degree?

I'm looking to move permanently to Indonesia in the next 2 or 3 years and teaching would be my only income.

Find out from somebody there who's already doing it and knows the score what you can get away with.

If you don't know anybody you're screwed...if you go the hard way you'll find out you could have gone easy; if you go easy you'll find out it needed to be hard.

That pretty much captures the impression of it I got. We must be the jammiest sods on the planet, able to get paid just to recognise and pronounce our own native bloody language.

Maybe the people I spoke to were helping to teach the intermediates?

The process that was described to you is how it is in Japanese state schools. Everywhere else in Japan it's teacher directly to student. I have no idea why they do it differently in state schools. Piss-easy money though, and good money at that. I'd have loved to have gotten me some of that action.

So to be an English teacher in China/Japan/etc all you need to be able to do is speak English and recognise when Johnny Foreigner doesn't?

I'll go get my Passport.

In Japan you need a degree, or a Japanese spouse. But even then you still need a degree actually.

As previously mentioned, before I was married I ran mine off on a photocopier using a mate's genuine one and some inventive cut & paste (old school with real paper).
After I was married I simply lied.

I'm in Anhui, Hefei (安徽,合肥), and if the girlfriend's parents have their way I will die here.

And why, oh engineering overseer, are they so incapable of understanding how air conditioning works. I was loving China while it was cold (and they were obviously all hiding). It's almost unsafe to work now, I've quit drinking (alcohol) and just drink water to try to get my fluids back. No chance here.

I think that even an intelligent chap like you must realise that this a a race of 'brain dead vacuums' as my boss calls them. I am laughing to myself just thinking of what we see every day here in China because you experience the same as me on a daily basis. Laughing

I walked to the local mall this afternoon and on several occasions the local kids ran back tho their mothers and were pointing at the funny looking white man. Shocked

Last night I was going to a hot pot restaurant, me and 3 Germans in a small taxi, when a guy on his bike didn't see us hit the front near side of the taxi and flew over the top of the car. He was bloody and bruised, but got up, taxi and bike were fooked.

As for air con.... when I walk into my office the air con is on, the windows are wide open Rolling Eyes ... they like the fresh air.......

The nearest I got to Hefei was Changzhou and Wuxi. I was visiting sub suppliers while I was working in Shanghai. I am going back home mid july for the birth of my daughter, but going from Qiqihar to Beijing, then to Manila then returning 10th September to Shanghai, over-nighting there and back to Qiqihar.

But China is a fun place don't you think?

It was when I first got here. Summer here can fuck off and die. I've been in hotter countries sure, working harder too... but living in a massive city (not choice but in China) with brutal air pollution... Fuck it's murdering me.

I nearly passed out in my lesson earlier. I'm in a raging mood but I daren't have a beer for fear of losing precious water.

All the smart ones go in to business/finance, leaving the idiots to do EVERYTHING else. Great system.

Dammit..... I am dealing with the idiots all day long too.

It is warming up here, 27degrees this afternoon, but I believe it gets up to the high 30's in a few more weeks. Are you in for the long haul? I intend to stay for as many years as I can or until I have enough together for a self sustaining business back home in Phils. How long are your contracts?

To save repetition, I'll just copy my answer to questions on my 'Don't visit China in summer' status on facebook.

Quote:
My complaint has nothing to do with temperature. More that some total tit made EVERY room completely air tight, to make sure the air con is as economical as possible... and then they refuse to turn it on unless the sky is blue. My job has GLASS classrooms so customers can see the pretty white dolls an sign up for $80 an hour classes... but the air con controls are in a room the other end of the building and control 2 (totally different sized) rooms for each control. Many have no windows. As 'spring' rolled through it was a bit stuffy and I was getting drowsy... today I literally nearly passed out. A difference of setting it 1 degree higher turns it from ice box to not on.
I got home from work 5 hours ago. I have been drinking water non stop since I got back. I only just lost my head ache and woke back up. I'm stuck working with these clowns for another month at least. Boo hiss.

I'm GTFO of here for summer summer. Fuck that, working to pay for taxis and aircon. No thanks. I was only on a 3 month contract anyway, as I was teaching on a tourist visa.

It doesn't help that when I'm dehydrated I get murderously angry very quickly. Good job work needs me (and wants me to come back), or they might be upset with the amount of swearing about the air con bullshit.
