Ducati 916 air filter

Hi all

Not sure if I may be better posting on a Ducati forum as this is not the sort of thing that comes up!

I recently bought a new set of airfilters as by Haynes manual they need replacing so thought it would be worth a look.

Well, striped the bike down and the air filter.....wasn't there

In the middle of the airbox you can see two lines, where the filter is meant to go (about 3/4 of the size of the air box! Missing!

But then I noticed there was a small filter, possibly a mod people do or a secondary filter? Couldn't find anything in the Haynes.

Any ideas on this filter in the pic?

Looks to be made of sponge, and they usually use paper from the factory?

I'd go with a dodgey mod. Especially as you're missing a "proper" air filter.

Been searching around and came across these two links which may explain it.

Seems to be that people remove the OEM filters and replace with a smaller filter which can be seen in pic 2 above.
