hi guys,

today i had a little heart attack as when switching the bike on , the oil light came on and stayed . i then put the bike on stand and watched through the glass and the level was below low or L . i could not see it at all.

i then switched it on and the light went off, it would have surly stayed on if low on oil , wouldn't it ?
anyways i then asked my partner to come and check it while i centre the bike(standing on it).
it was then showing as full.

i guess based on that my oil is ok and the light came on because maybe my bike was parked for 3-4 days on its side

is that happening to you guys as well( light comming on when on stand ) ?
do you check the level by asking someone else to stand on it and you check it or just use rear stand ?

Always check oil while upright, never on the stand!

As for the oil light it stays on when ignition is on but not started

To check my bike's oil level it has to be on the centre stand so i can only assume that you'd have to have the SV on a rear paddock stand or centre stand (if it has one) or maybe your bike has to just be upright... what ever way you check i do know you do not check your oil level by having your bike on the side stand.

Make sure you check your oil in the correct way ASAP, as your engine could seize.

the oil light goes off as soon as the engine is on which i think it when the oil pump starts to pump oil thus sensing there is oil in it

but what drives me nut is the fact that the oil light is always on when the ignition switch it on, surely suzuki should have built something into their bike that is not stupid enough to wait for the engine to crank and then sense the existence of sufficient oil

This is probably a built in function, what happens if the bulb/sensor fails? you have no idea, because the light just stays out, instead it is always on, so that if you switch the ignition on and the light isn't lit up, something is amiss.

the oil light will remain on when the ignition is on but the engine is not started. This indicates the bulb is working (LED in this case) and as soon as pressure is built up once the engine is running (usually instant) it goes out.

If it comes on during riding it means the oil pressure has dropped indicating a serious problem.

Usually on the SV (I had one) it usually lights up with the FI indicator on the LCD screen to indicate other problems.

Have you driven a car? 95% of most cars, the oil light is always on before the engine is started. Its normal for it go out once running.

Think your over paranoid here. Nothing to worry about Thumbs Up

also I must point out, the oil light is for pressure! Not how much oil you have in the engine. That's what the sight glass is for.

Yes some will go out just as the key is turned to start but the engine hasn't started just yet. All normal.

And Paddy, that's new to me, learn something new every day!

on the xj600 you get the oil level but no pressure warning light, so you could have plenty of oil and a broken pump and no pressure, fucked engine Wink
