16 right now riding my RS50, gonna do my test to get my L plates off when I'm 17, but not sure what 125 to get?

Leaning towards RS125, Derbi GPR or Cagiva Mito

Are you looking for speed or reliability? Two strokes like the RS125 and Mito are fast top end when unrestricted (illegal) and can probably get into three figures on the speedo. Problem is you'll have to let it warm up every morning and it won't be as reliable as a four stroke. You will also probably need engine rebuilds every so often where as a four stroke you wouldn't.

Four strokes like the YBR, CBR, CBF are very reliable. They can get up to about 70 (from what I've heard CBR will do 80ish) and to drive legally, you don't need any more speed than this. They don't look as big as the RS but you have to remember they're small 125's.

IMO, I'd rather have the reliability of a four stroke under my belt than an extra 25mph. If you're looking for a 2 stroke, I'd suggest an NSR, for a four stroke, I'd say a CBR or YBF. A CG is the most reliable 125 you can get, the engine is bulletproof and perfect for commuting, but it feels like driving a brick.

On my RS50 I have to warm up but it always breaks and is expensive but I love the speed of my RS50! I'm not really sure, I think of rather a 2 stroke and hit the 3 digits

That's your call. You have to remember, by driving it unrestricted 33bhp, you're not legally complying with your licence, therefore if you get pulled you could be done. Also, if you're involved in an accident, there's a chance you might not be paid out as insurance companies look at things like this.

Tbh i'd buy a Yamaha YZF-125R if i was in your position. It'll be muchhhh more reliable than the 2stroke's and is still reasonabley fast for a 125, topping out around 80-85.

If you're adamant you want a 2stroke that goes over 100mph, get a Honda NSR125, most reliable 2stroke sports bike and does about 110mph derestricted and does 0-60 in about 6sec's when derestricted. But it'll still need rebuilds and it drinks alot of 2stroke oil and petrol (expensive to run). Nice bikes though, you could pick a decent one up for around £1,500-£2,000.

From past experience, owning a derestricted nsr125 and now a slow cbf 125, i'd pick my cbf125 every time because it's a better commuter, more comfortable to ride, less time spent at the mechanics, almost as enjoyable to ride and A LOT cheaper to run. I'd go for a sporty 4 stroke 125 if i was you like the new cbr's (2011+) or a yzf.

Good luck picking a bike Thumbs Up

Yeah... OK.... you love the speed of your 50. Oh-Kay....

Well, lets stick this into perspective shall we.

Even a CG125 has two and a half times the displacement and around twice the power. I say time and again that 125's are some of the most awsome motorcycles any-one ever encounters.... usually for the simple reason that its the first motorcycle they ever encounter, and with no other references to judge by, they ARE awesome.... and stepping up from a 50... any 125 will still be pretty awesome.

Three digit speeds are illegal. Whether achieved on a 125 or a litre bike.

A good 125, can still loose you your licence.... a licence YOU currently haven't proved you deserve, and don't actually have......

Ponder that a while.

Bikes aren't ALL about going fast.

Any idiot can crack open the throttle and go a bit fast. The tricky bit is to do that without CRASHING or blowing the thing up.

Think that your comment about how often you have siezed your 50 ought to offer suggestion that perhaps its not such a wonderful idea.

Slow bike that works is faster than the fastest bike that dont!

How much fun is going really, really, (actually not so) fast, for a short while, only to go incredibly, very slow, pushing the fucker home again!

The regulation Learner commuter is as good a starting point as any other 125, and while its boring, it is cheap, its dependable, and usually reasonably reliable.

Cagiva Mito or Aprillia RS125 are group 7 insurance and loaded above that for teenage tits crashing them on L-Plates. They are slower than a humble Suzuki GS500, more expensive to run, demanding high quality two stroke oil on top of thier fuel, which they burn faster than a 500, and demanding lots and lots of loving cash and care to avoid them blowing up TOO often. Ie you are paying a hell of a lot over the odds for the privilidge of NOT having such a quick bike.

Last year, we'd have been saying, if you want quick, go get a commuter, go get a 33bhp licence on it, and then go get a 500.

Now, there ent much aparent reason for getting a licence at 17, as you cant have a bigger bike. But there is.

1/ Starts the count down on your 2 year New Drivers Act probation. Might as well get the high risk of them bouncing you back to L's out the way on a bike less likely to help you loose your licence.

2/ Nails down your Thoery & CBT. Cost of doing tests is as cheap as having to repeat CBT; and done and dusted, when you are 19 or older and may think about upgrading to a higher licence entitlement; you have clear shot, and dont have to worry about getting the Theory done first or CBT cert running out.

3/ Means you have done tests. If you decide to upgrade then, means you know you can pass-em; its just doing it on a bigger heavier bike. Ought to mean better chance of a pass, with less expensive training.

MEANWHILE.

You can ditch the ruddy L's. You can use motorways, if you wish, you can carry a pillion if you wish.

And you have EARNED your road-room and proved you are capable enough and responsible enough to be on a bike unsupervised.

Two bikes go past a coppa; both look a bit sporty and seem to be going a bit quick. One has L-Plates, other doesn't. Which one he going to pull?

Get your head in the right place, and think about your licence, think about the future and sod here and now quick thrills. Believe me, a 99mph Mito, in the wider scheme of things is NOT a fast motorcycle.

Well my 50 is quick enough to keep me up with my all my friends 1.2l cars as I'm born in August and everyone's already driving.

Your talking like a coppa and basically just gave me a bollocking.

It's between a YZF-R125, RS125 or a NSR125

Whatever you choose.......Just make sure its red.

Pretty common law that red bikes add a good 10mph onto your top speed.

Actually Tefs giving sound advice, you only need to get caught once and you can say goodbye to your illegally modified ped and hello to a fpn for driving without insurance and years of insurance premiums about ten times higher than the norm, assuming you can find an insurer willing to take the risk.

I was actually hinting that IF he's prepared to live with a notoriousely fickle, highly strung, high cost, high maintenence, sub 100mph motorcycle, to 'cheat the system' and get.... ooohh... maybe an extra 20mph of illegal speed....

Getting a LICENCE first.... makes more than a little sense.

Loose the L-Plate, and a coppa just sees another power-ranger.

WITH an L-Plate, coppa see's bike going 'a bit fast' for something that ought to be chugging along, barely able to do the National Speed Limit.... and is going to think "Ey oop! Easy colla, there, by looks!" and go try his luck.

But hey, I'm just a moaning old git, out to spoil the kiddies fun, ent I?
