I know this has been discussed a million times, but this evening I called into a new petrol station(Tesco if it matters) to fill up my van, and whilst there, I asked them what their policy was when filling up a bike. The manager and cashier both agreed that provided the visor was lifted, and the rider 'appeared' to be old enough, they wouldn't have a problem(basically a tracksuit wearing youth on a scooter or moped would need to remove his helmet), however they then showed me a letter from Northamptonshire Police. The letter was asking all petrol stations to insist that all motorbike riders removed their helmets before being allowed to fill up.

So its not the individual companies which are doing this, its coming from the boys in blue.

Tesco have the same policy, helmet off before entering the shop, but the police want to change that.

They love this.
If they won't let you use the pimp then tell you to take your helmet off to fill up on the speaker then take it off fill up then put it back on and try to pay. They love it when you get to quote what they said

My local Tesco express is pretty good, I go there a lot and fill/pay with helmet on with no probs. They probably recognise me and also probably haven't suffered any drive aways so deem it a low risk area.

Shell 'round my way also want you off the bike before they'll authorize the pump for you to fill up.

reasonable enough, I wouldn't fancy the risk of splashing "The Boys" with a highly flammable liquid.

Since I found out the staff at my local petrol station get the cost of fuel thefts taken out of their wages I don't blame them. Once their face is on camera most people would think twice.

This is at the Tesco in Wellingborough:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=86140

I haven't tried filling up on my bike there though.

Saw a fella filling up at a local BP garage the other day, they definitely don't mind you keeping your lid on there. However because the pump didn't reset to 0 fast enough he took his helmet off and you could see his hesitance of putting it on the floor. Hope other bikers don't give in this easily!

I've never had a problem with taking my helmet off at petrol stations, although now I just flip the front of my helmet up when I get off the bike and before I even open the petrol cap.

Never been asked to remove it when I've gone in to pay etc.

The only time I ever had a problem was one night on the way home from work (middle of winter) I went in to buy petrol and because I was wearing a ski mask the guy asked me to remove it, this was about 1am and I had to pay at the window... the only thing I was annoyed about was the fact it took about 10 minutes for me to get wrapped up in the gear, and since I was paying with cash etc I didn't see the point, but I didn't moan or complain about it, he asked politely so why bitch and whinge about it

Never had any problems around here wearing my helmet but the majority of the time I have my earphones in unless I'm just going a quick trip round town so I take the helmet off anyway... sometimes I'll just leave my lid hanging on my mirror too...

i wear a bally when riding anyway(my lid is annoyingly windy)
its always amusing to hear "remove your helmet please"
the look on their faces once you remove it and all they see is a set of lovely blue eyes and a set of ginger eyebrows..
pricelessly pointlessly annoying.

Really? This conversation again? Rolling Eyes

Visor up for me and that's it, I'm not taking my £400 helmet off just for them to see my face. They've got my numberplate.

I stand there ignoring them if they dont turn the pump on and wait till they come out. I often play dumb shaking the nozzel and looking down the end to see if its blocked. Just for the luls.

Some time it fun to throw a really dramatic tantrum with body movements.

Some times i just drive off

99% of the time they turn the pumps on though.

I hate the cunts that say minimum spent by card is £10.00 as my wr250 only takes about £8.00 to fill from the point at which i have to turn the reserve on.

What would the law say if they have let you fill up with helmet on but refused to let you pay while you still had helemt on and refused to remove it?

I think they have leaner policies in cities where they have more CCTV (esp London), suffer less drive-offs and have easy ways of tracking vehicles. Aren't all license plates automatically scanned on London CCTV, meaning they could track you as you drove out of the city through every major CCTV cam?
