l want to use a drift hd camera on my tour for 2 weeks across europe but not sure how to go about the use of the memory cards ,32gb gives 3hrs recording so would cost a fortune for enough cards but don,t want to carry bulky laptop anyone have any ideas for an alternative to download the cards for further use

How about a small netbook with a large external drive. like 500gb/1tb.

I used time lapse photos on one day and used less than 32gb to take a pic every 3 seconds with a gopro over 700 miles

3 hrs doesn't seem like a lot on a 32 Gb card can you adjust the quality of the capture ie maybe set it to a lower setting and frame speed? though you would have to test the quality before you go (I am not sure of the option on the Drift HD as I use the ContourHD 1080p)

I agree with Marmalade though if you cannot afford a hand full of cards then the only option seems to be a laptop with sufficient Hard disc space to save your files to.

Another option would be to check where you are staying and see if they have a PC you can use for this purpose during your stay. You would still need an external HDD though or a pile of blank DVD's. I did this on a 21 day trip we did to Turkey and Back.

I did consider one of these https://www.maplin.co.uk/communicator-d2-combo-hard-drive-dock-340415 but it still needs a laptop/PC to work but again makes it easier to use on someone's PC

Something like this will do it without the need for anything else:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230974580545

Could swear you could get some quite cheap caddies that did the same.

Or if you are using microSDHC cards, you can pop them into a rooted android phone and transfer across using a USB host cable.
(Or using normal cards transfer them over to the phone first, then back again.)

Haven't seen these before they look like the solution to the problem and cheaper than a Laptop (if you don't already have one) I see on Amazon that they do a 500GB version

I have a little drive which looks like a typical USB powered external drive.
When not connected to USB, it runs on 4 AA batteries in a little pod thing.
You connect the card to the USB by card reader and it automatically reads and copies everything on the card.
It does work quite well but there is no way to be sure that files have successfully transferred other than noting a flickering blue LED.

A worse problem is that it is now wildly outclassed at 20GB, as I bought it when 1GB memory cards were about £50!
But presumably the concept is out there still.

edit - that ebay item is kind of the same thing but at three times the cost. It does seem to give you more info on what's happening - i.e. used space increases.
For that money you could have a netbook though, and it might be useful - and not that much bigger flat in a bag.

I think the best option would be buy more cards, combined with reducing quality somewhat at least through less interesting areas.

You also spread the risk of failure which is not that unusual in cards used in harsh environment e.g. vibration, might get damp.

yeh your prob right it,s just hard trying to decide between the further use of all the cards and the extra advantages of the laptop over them ,both could suffer in transit the pro,s & con,s of it all are an annoying decision to overcome
