Hey,
Im currently in the process of decorating my hallway. Since i moved in i noticed a really thick cable running down the corner of the hall way. While taking out the 6th phone line (I've never seen so many phone cables connected to nothing) which ran behind this cable i noticed the cable is in fact a chunky new earth cable which runs back to the electric meter.

It appears to have been put through the wall and is attached with an earth strap to my Gas Supply (My side of the Gas meter).

Now i don't wont a green stripy wire in my hall way so want to move it. (I understand how important this cable is so no need to preach).

My question is where can these cables be connected?

Cheers,
Shaun R.

Its the earth bonding for your gas, you cant really remove it as such as the earth bonding for your gas should come from your meter and be 10mm in size. You could re route it I guess?

You could re-route it however I would not advise you doing it yourself as the water could be bonded with the same cable. It should also have resistance of less the 0.05 ohms.

Code:

544.1.2 - The main equipotential bonding connection to any gas, water or other service shall be made as near as practicable to the point of entry of that service into the premises, Where there is an insulating section or insert at that point, or there is a meter, the connection shall be made to the consumer's hard metal pipework and before any branch pipework. Where practicable the connection shall be made within 600mm of the meter outlet or at the union point of entry to the building if the meter is external"

If its in the corner of the hall way just paint or paper over it! Why make life hard for yourself?

And TBH a 10mm earth is not HUGE, one painted you would never notice.

The Gas bond is in the ideal place and where any subsequent electrician or tester would check when doing a visual inspection when carrying out an E.I.C.R.

What would no or incorrect earth bonding on the gas meter mean to a E.I.C.R?
On a landlords gas safety inspection it is just classified as 'not to currant standards' which is basically an advisory so I always wondered how important the earth bonding actually is. They are normally incredibly anal about anything that might pose even the slightest risk.

It would be coded as a C2 which means 'Potentially dangerous' and hence the installation classed in an unacceptable condition.

C3 is classed as Improvement Recommended.
C1 is Danger present.
