I'm totally confident with servicing a car, but I've never tackled anything more than a Ybr125 bikewise. I'm going to leave carb balancing to the experts, but apart from that is there anything else particularly difficult I need to know about?
I've got the Haynes manual.

Also today I tried adjusting the clutch at the sprocket cover end and it made no difference to the lever end adjustment which is right on the limit. Does this mean I'm looking at a new clutch in the near future?

I don't think the shims need doing until 16k but check the manual.

Did you take the black round plug out of the sprocket cover to adjust the clutch where there is a nut you loosen and turn in the screw in the middle.?

Yes that's how I adjusted the clutch, and no the valve clearances aren't part of this service.

I wouldn't think you need new clutch plates.

Have you had the bike from new.?

It is likely someone had the sprocket cover off and put the adjuster back in...in the wrong slot and then took up all the adjustment.

If you loosen the screw off then take the cover off then take out the part the cable goes to and move it anticlockwise to the next slot you should have plenty of adjustment.
