Booking the Dublin-Holyhead ferry for a weeks touring in Wales next month and we are looking for some interesting/scenic places to visit or B&B in. GF & myself travelling by bike (xjr13), thinking of maybe booking somewhere for 4/5 nights and using that as a base so we can go exploring without the hassle of packing/unpacking every day. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated, like good pub/B&B,s or Biker friendly cottage to rent ? cheers:T

Last month a small group of us did a similar thing.

The Hostel had a safe in each room.

Portmeirion is worth a visit so I'm told.

The Elan Valley is definitely worth visiting. It's an beautiful place.
Aberystwyth is definitely worth a visit too.
Builth Wells has quite a number of pubs, though I don't actually know what they're like as I've never stopped there.
Depending how far you want to ride, you could always head south to St Davids, Solva and Tenby. But that is as far south as you could go. Laughing

Wherever you go, make sure you ride the A483. It's a stupendously good road, certainly one of the best ones I've been on in the UK; Newtown to Crossgates is brilliant. Google maps it!

I love all of mid Wales, 250 mile blast to Aberystwyth and back today Thumbs Up

Its not half as good, I used to see a girl in Brecon so I have explored those valleys in some depth.

I do have a particularly vivid memory of getting up very early one morning when I was still riding my Hornet and needing to get to work in Worcester. Google maps says 1hr 40, I smashed it in 50 minutes Laughing

That area gets better the further north you go; there are plenty of good roads in South-mid Wales but theres often too much traffic.

Hard to decide where to base ourselves Confused Finding places with vacancies will probably be the deciding factor as most B&B,s are fully booked and any cottages/chalets to rent are for 4/6 people, making it too expensive Sad Tenting is out of the question as we like our comfort too much Laughing Any Bike/Aircraft/Car museums around north Wales worth a visit ?

You can motorcycle over the Barmouth toll rail bridge for free, it should be £2.50, and stay at the Bikers Retreat nearby.

There has been a slight change of plan(well transport Laughing ) decided to take the van instead of bike. So first day we head for Llandudno for 2 nights, then its off to Aberaefron for 2 nights (stopping off at Drew Pritchards of salvage hunters fame)on the way, then its Caernarfon for our final overnight before catching the ferry back on Sunday. this should let us see a fair bit of Wales in the few days we are there Cool Just hope it pisses down 1 of those days so i can justify my decision for not taking the xjr Embarassed

You can buy a ticket here in Cardiff from the Cardiff Bus ticket office. It lets you travel on trains & buses in a lot of parts of Wales.
Personally I wouldn't do a tour. I'd do research myself of places I'd like to visit then look into transport.

I think he may have already decided on a form of transport... Rolling Eyes

There are hundreds of brilliant roads all over Wales, as a general principle, if you steer clear of the south east corner, you're on to a winner.

If you come as far as south Wales, i'll quote a previous post -
Zen Dog wrote:
This road is a gem, very twisty, great views, almost "technical" in places. Has an ice cream van. Very Happy
https://goo.gl/maps/YGeQv

This one is an open road, decent overtaking places, fast and medium speed corners, swoops up and down hills.
https://goo.gl/maps/KhH09

This one is really twisty too, quite a narrow road, with one very narrow 1 lane bridge you have take quite slowly. But absolutely worth it. Its a lovely road for almost the entire length.
https://goo.gl/maps/rjlpA

There are dozens of other great roads all over Wales. But if i was going to tell you one thing in South Wales, the easy choice is to head for Llandovery and pick a direction. Thumbs Up

And +1 for the Elan Valley. Its beautiful.
