having an issure with cylinder 3 backfiring!
All leads are sparking aswel as all plugs (replaced with a 2nd new set just incase)

I have managed to get hold of a digital compression tester and my readings are fairly different

Cylinder 1 = 140psi
Clyinder 2 = 124psi
Cylinder 3 = 96psi
Cylinder 4 = 110psi

Is cylinder 3 clearly having problems? as im not sure on what the tolerence would be as i cant find the specs in the haynes manual.

new engine time?

cheers

They are low.. all really low.

96 and 110 is probably well out of spec.

Pop some oil down the bore and retry, if its increases the figures, its a rings job.

At a guess, with such differing reading's across the board I would put my money on it being a valve seating issue. But as said do the wet compression test first to find out more.

Just out of curiosity and not to hijack the thread but if it were to be the rings would it be economically viable to split the engine and change them yourself (rings and or pistons) or would the parts end up costing more than it would be worth?
Piston kits seem to be lots of money Shocked .

Depends on what price you can get a new engine/bike at.

You should factor in £100-150 in gaskets plus around £40 each ring set; not including any reboring that may be needed. You should also factor in tools such as a valve spring compressor and tools for reseating the valves.

I'm going to rebuild the top end on my XJ600 because I think the valve stem seals need replacing and the base gasket, but I said to myself that if the rings needed doing I would just write the engine off instead.

Was £45 per on the GS500 too! Though that's Wemoto.

I think I'm going to buy bikes in the future based on engine component prices... Laughing

Seems like it need piston ring replacement, 3 and 4 are quite low. Is would be best to get oem parts in replacement of these parts.

Fixed that for you.
