I took my bike to get the front tyre changed yesterday and was told that I had 0.5mm of brake pad left (I knew they were low anyway.)

The problem was that apparently my pistons are seized Sad they sai it would be between £80 - £90 for both calipers to be rebuilt with new pads, does this seem a fair price?

I would consider attempting this myself but the mot runs out soon and I just want it done ASAP really. Laughing

The mot runs out at the end of this month so before then ideally, looking on line it seems that for pads and seals it'll cost about £30 or just over, not including rubber grease and whatnot. So maybe £80 - £90 isn't too bad of a price after all.

It's not the hardest of jobs and you could save yourself £60 to spend on beer/drugs/hookers. Have a go yourself and if you get really stuck (which you won't) then take the calliper into the shop to be done.

Hmmm I do like drugs and hookers, such a hard choice. Laughing

This is why I want a shitty second bike to practice on!

The only thing is, it's my local garage that I use whenever I have an issue that I can't/can't be bothered to do myself. So I don't want to mess it up and go in there with pads and seals that I bought elsewhere and ask them to sort it out, after I'd already booked it in to be done there this coming Monday.

It's business, they won't care, they'll be milking it through the labour charge anyway.

Order the seals, buy a tin of brake cleaner and get started.

Ride over to Maidstone, I just happen to need new front pads on the Varadero, so you can practice on that, it won't be going anywhere as it was vandalised last night but gives you ample "fuck with" practice and if you do end up breaking it, I couldn't really give a piddle Laughing

Failing that, I'll help you do yours, I have the tools needed, you have the caliper. Sorted.

Cheers mate, you're one of the good ones on this forum. Laughing

I'll probably drop it in to the garage on Monday, watch them do it and learn for next time. After buying the parts and using the petrol to get to Maidstone and back I wouldn't be overly far off the price of the garage doing it. Plus the garage is 2 mins from my house. Laughing

Any other problems I have, I'll be sure to let you know mate, you seem like a decent bloke. Thumbs Up

Plus I have already booked it in to be done and they are decent guys down there so might as well stick to that for this job.

A quick read of some Haynes manuals/guides on youtube and stuff should see you right with the calipers.

I like calipers, unless they are proper rusty Laughing

This. I've done mine, to be fair the difficult bit was not having the seals. And bleeding the brakes seemed hard, but wasn't really.
Although if you hang aound and watch the garage do it, you'll deffo be reet for next time.
