PostPosted: 18:04 - 07 Aug 2013    Post subject: Riding Around In North Wales Reply with quote

As I’ve been in Manchester for the last 3 years I’ve really missed all the amazing roads in North Wales where I lived for 10 years prior to moving to Manchester. My time in Manchester has now come to an end and I’m back in Wales for a fortnight before doing some travelling around the world and then moving to Berlin to live.

Lucky for me my most trusted riding buddy Ghost is still in North Wales and is as keen as ever to ride. A short notice facebook message yesterday asking if I wanted to get the Wales section Tag quickly turned into a bit of a ride plan. Neither of us have ridden much since our trip to the Nurburgring so it was good to get out again even if it did mean having to watch our speedos like hawks!

After meeting in Tesco to fill up we headed up to the top of Llanberis to get the tag. We were met by a herd of cows guarding the location (despite us negotiating all the booby traps they’d left on the road, cow pats are slippery!) but we managed to get the tag without too much bovine bother.

Overlooking Llanberis, Llyn Padarn, Llyn Peris and into Snowdonia National Park:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4234_zps79000276.jpg

We decided to move the tag to an easy spot to get the game moving again. It meant taking in the Llanberis Pass which is one of my favourite roads in North Wales. The road itself doesn’t have a great surface but the scenery is breathtaking and the dry stone walls lining the road definitely keep you on your toes, a “must ride” road for anyone in the area. We took a quick break at the next tag and saw a few military helicopters and jets from RAF Valley practising some manoeuvres in the valleys (no photos of them as they were too quick for me!).

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4236_zpsa24c56e8.jpg

I’ve been wanting to try a few different photo techniques recently and Ghost was willing to be the subject which was lucky as it required some very close quarters riding and I didn’t fancy trying it out with someone I’d never ridden with before! We headed down from the new tag onto Beddgelert and I snapped some photos along the way.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4317_zpsdc0a9a1f.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4371_zps78fc5b43.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4400_zps0414f015.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4442_zpsbe28199d.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4487_zpsdf01b4e7.jpg

We had a quick stop to check the photos and I was happy with what we’d got considering the sketchy way in which they were shot! I was keen for the ride not to turn into too much of a photoshoot though so we carried on from Beddgelert through to Porthmadog, Blaenau Ffestiniog (where Ghost was sure he’d dropped his chain when in fact his bike had just slipped out of 6th gear!) and up into Betws y Coed where we had another break.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4516_zpsa9351e81.jpg

After a bit of a chat and a check of Ghost’s bike to make sure there were no bits hanging off it we took a bit of a cruise along the A5 towards Bangor where I decided to snap a few more photos.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4526_zps4a0a127a.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4535_zpsda7f5a0c.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4536_zpsefc98481.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/IMG_4552_zpsa31d9877.jpg

We stopped at Llyn Ogwen so I could put my camera away but I stupidly didn’t take a photo of the lake! Ghost had to head off at this point to run some errands so I went back the way we’d come to head home. I’ve ridden these roads hundreds of times in the past but it’s true what they stay about not appreciating what you’ve got until it’s gone. I had a blast riding these roads again and I suspect I’ll probably burn a few more tanks of fuel before I disappear off on my travels in a couple of weeks!

Cheers Thumbs Up

Camera set to 2 second timer, press the button (or mash it with gloves on!), grab the bars and hope for the best. Lots of trial and error and the keeper rate is pretty low but I think the shots are worth it when they work.

I'll get it when I go up the coast next probably! Photos always look good on the tiny camera screen but you see so much more on a computer monitor and a lot of the ones I thought were fine turned out to be too blurry. Definitely pleased with the photos we got though Thumbs Up

Send me a message on facebook if you want any of them in high res.

Awesome pics, I head down towards Bala and the area a lot, I would be interested in a ride sometime as you guys seem to know the back roads better than I certainly do!

Need to get my bike back on the road first Thumbs Up

Great pics and North wales despite the out to get you police presence is still a great bike for riding bikes! Thumbs Up

I've had many nice rides and long weekends away with biking mates in north wales and all around the Snowdonia area, and nice days out in Portmadog, Barmouth, Rhyl etc.

Remember after one long rideout on a hot summers day, finding a river about 2miles from where we were staying, and jumping in naked with a load of sweaty blokes, It was the coldest I've ever been in my life and I had a massive headache after about 1min in the water. Probably shouldn't have admitted anything in this paragraph though! Laughing

South Wales has always been a dump for me by comparison, but I've never given it a fair chance and been to places like Cardigan bay etc.

You'll have to be quick, I'm leaving the country for good in just over a week! Been down towards Bala a few times and it's always been good.

I still maintain that North Wales gets a bad rep when it comes to police. We only saw the copper chopper once when we were in the carpark for the second tag and it didn't follow us. The tourists driving everywhere at 30mph are more of a problem than the police in North Wales!

The Denbigh moors was always on my route bacl home from Manchester. Bit of a detour but definitley worth it if not for the Evo Triangle alone!

There are some great roads down towards Porthmadog and Barmouth, I took a BCF rideout down there once on the way back from Aberystwyth and there were no complaints.

Which one? Laughing

To be fair I don't know if KLR and I have just been massively lucky with police in North Wales, but we've got away with some stupid stuff up until now. I think a lot of it comes down to avoiding the main routes on sunny Sundays and bank holidays when you know the police are going to be out in force. Keep em peeled the rest of the time and try not to dip into triple figures too much and hopefully you'll be alright. Not taking the mick with visors/plates/exhausts is a good idea too, although I'll admit to having all three at once on some of my bikes!

And yeah the Ysbyty Ifan road is a cracking one, actually all the roads around there are good so don't just stick to the Evo Triangle cos there's plenty about if you have an explore. I like the Evo Triangle but so much of it is only fun over 100 mph and I'm sure it's probably a bit more heavily policed due to its rep I'm always a bit nervous riding round it.

The ZRX, I'm not one for modern sportsbikes. If Kawasaki did a 600/750 version of the ZRX I'd be all over it.

This basically. Don't go for mad hoons on bank holiday weekends with a tiny plate, iridium visor and extra loud cans and you should be ok. There's plenty of great roads that are off the beaten track too, no need to stick with the really popular touristy routes where the Arrive Alive vans camp out!

I've still not had any commissions from the Visit Wales gang despite my best efforts of trying to sell it to BCF Laughing

I guess the Zephyr 750 is the closest thing to that. Saying that, the ZRX doesn't have to be a screamer and you can cruise on it easily. It doesn't have to be a rear tyre/chain and sprocket eater - I sort of choose to make mine like that Laughing

It's coming I promise! Half way through episode 5 now and I will have them all finished (probably scheduled release on youtube) by the end of the weekend. I have no choice as I can't do them in Asia!

Sorry, just seen this!

I'm basically flat out sorting out my stuff for 3 months in Asia now so other than rides into Llandudno to pick up last minute stuff I'm afraid the bike is consigned to the drive Crying or Very sad

Pretty sure Ghost will go for a ride with you though seeing as I'm leaving him high and dry!

I'll be printing off a lot of my photos to decorate my next flat for sure. I'm about to go travelling for a bit but then I'll be spending lots of money at the printers when I get back!

Yes there's a big playing field behind the car park in the tenth photo. That's the car park for Betws y Coed train station. There are a lot of school type activities in the area so I wouldn't be surprised if there were lots of school trips to Betws!
