I woke up yesterday morning thinking "I want a new helmet". So with what's left of my wage packet, off I ventured. I wanted one with a black visor as my last Arai with one got nicked by some little shits.

Went to Hein Gericke, Get Geared and J&S. The cheapest I could get a helmet in the colours I wanted with a black visor was £160! I suppose for protecting your head, you would want to spend a lot, but it's a lot when you're not on much money! I wanted to spend around £100 ideally, if not less.

Remembered a place up the road which sells tyres and all sorts of bits and bobs. £55 with a black visor for a new helmet! He just swapped the black visor from the one with the colour I didn't want to the colour I did want, which was nice.

Only a Lazer but it has a decent sharp rating. I prefer to pick things up from a shop and try them on.

£200 max. I don't buy into the whole arai/shoei thing.

I can't afford a £500 lid but even if I could I doubt I would go for that option.

If I spent £500 I'd be mortified if I ever dropped it or scratched it!

I've always found something I like around 80-120 quid.

Oh I do, up to a point I believe that you get what you pay for. The comfort, lightness and the features of the top brand helmets are better than cheaper ones.

I am a Shoei man myself, I have never found any cheaper helmets as comfy to wear when out on my bike so I stick to what I like, plus I have that added advantage of being able to buy my lids at pretty much trade price, which knocks towards 50% off the retail price!

You guys who spend £250+ on your helmets, what sort of wage are you on? Out of curiosity.

Spent £400 on a lid and I hated it. Replaced it with a £100 lid which has been faultless. I won't be spending much in future.

Grassington, North Yorkshire if you're from around this way.

Absolutely awesome roads out there. Up to Leyburn after that, then down to Ripon from there (one of the best roads I've been on).

Ive got an addiction to buying helmets I think.....only been riding 6 months and ive got 4.....been looking to get another too. I usually go for HJCs from Lids Direct as they are quite reasonably priced. The only thing I find is that the shell sizes seem big so makes my head look huge! Might try a Shoei next as I believe each size helmet has its own sized shell whereas HJC just have a couple so you get a medium but the shell is XL.

I think £250 is the most id ever spend on a helmet.

Do those three shops have a good range of stock? I need a new lid and the selection of shops up here has been shrinking.

Main interested in Shoei and Arai.

J&S has a lot of stock, at least the one in Leeds does. The three shops are all within about a 30 second walk of each other. Get Geared and Hein Gericke are next door to each other! J&S is across the road.

My Caberg was about a hundred quid.

I don't think it's safer than my 50 quid helmet was, it just has sun visor/better venting/more comfort.

500 quid for a helmet? Eh, me spending an extra 100 quid a year on healthy food would probably do more for my safety IMO.

My last lid cost £40, my current was £90.

Only benefits I can see with the "you get what you pay for" argument is lightness and wind noise reduction.

Even the heaviest of helmets is not that heavy and mine is hardly a neck breaker. As for the noise. Most people who wear helmets, even the most expensive, tend to wear earplugs or headphones which renders any noise reduction a moot point.

As said many times, what is more important than the cost is the fit. I'd happily spend £90 on a lid that fits than £500 on one that doesnt but has extra lightness, noise reduction and has a brand on the front.

I've only got one lid, cost me £160-170 I think. Nothing too expensive, but I like it and it has a quality feel to it. The other week I was looking at other helmets and the same brand had a cheaper range, under £100, they definitely felt and looked cheaper. I'm sure other brands have better quality helmets under 100.

I think I'd spend up to 250 on one.

Don't forget the extra £50 for the "This year's swoopy graphics" tax Smile

Having owned a £350 shoei XR1100 for the past 2 and a half years, it still looks exactly the same as the day I bought it (paintwork has stood up fantastically), fits like a glove, is extremely light and has great wind noise reduction.

Would I buy again? Definitely.

In the past I had a £60 Demon helmet, a £80 Nitro and a £120 HJC - none of them have come even close in fit, longevity or comfort over long distance and ventilation cooling.

I think it all depends on your head shape but for me the xr1100 from shoei is so comfy, u just don't get that level of comfort in cheap lids!!

I'm after a white GT air now, too expensive ATM!!

My AGV V-Flyer cost me £170, reduced from £240, and that lasted 4 years and a lot of miles. Ti Tech was £230 down from over £400 but it stood up to 5 years use, it still feels like new and was so comfy I didn't want to replace it. My new Nolan was £170, on sale at half price, and I hope to get the same amount of use from it.

Cheap helmets can't stand the wear and tear and the premium you pay for a decent helmet is worth it.
