Looks like a CX500B, which dates it to 1979/80.

Weapon of choice for a million couriers, despite a number of well known engine problems.

Deeply uninspiring machine, which made it all the stranger when Honda chose it as the basis for their entry into the turbo market.

Thanks for the reply.

What makes it a CX500B instead of a CX500A?

Also, as far as I can see by researching this bike, I can't find any in solid black like this one. Could it be a custom paintjob?

Again, speculative opinion on this, A/B etc normally correlates to the years of a bike, so for example a 'A' might run from 1978-1979, and a 'B' from 1980-1981 - purely as an example. Often the bikes actually don't 'change' each year in production terms.

Regards the paint i'd be inclined to agree its probably been customised/sprayed - it looks a bit matte black in the picture - i think most where a more shiny 'decorative' finish back then with tank-outling etc, but again - i maybe wrong Very Happy

Furthermore the 'HONDA' text on the tank looks like singular stuck on letters - most bikes i've come across from that time have a single 'badge' thats bolt/stucked on, so again i'd be inclined to think it was added after paint customising perhaps Question

You can only see the edge of the rear wheel rim, which suggests it's got the black reverse Comstar wheels, plus it looks like a square brake fluid reservoir, which are both features of the B.

To be fair though, it was 15 years old in that picture and it had probably seen service as a courier bike, when it would've been fitted with whatever was available when it broke, so it's difficult to be definitive.

As for the paint, yes, it would've had some sort of stripe on the tank and side panels, so somebody has had the rattle cans out.

Thanks for all your help. I know what you mean about the side badge. The tank may have been painted and then new letters stuck over to solve this issue of the old logo being covered.

This was actually my fathers bike (man in picture)- Myself being the older of the two children. Did't have my father to ask about this motor, and I'm thinking of owning a bike for myself sometime in the near future.

My pleasure mate, good luck finding a bike if you can.

Funnily enough similar story myself [hence the very vague late 70's bike knowledge Laughing].

Grandfather rode bikes in the second world war in a U.S. army unit. Sadly dont have the money or experience to get an original but spent the best part of last year converting a 1970s bike.

Started off like this

Ended up as this
https://i43.tinypic.com/2mmdeki.jpg

Its obviously a rather argueably poor immitation Laughing but the best i could do on my budget.

Best of luck mate Thumbs Up

Those are some pretty sweet modifications. Nice touch adding the head gear.

Best of luck to you with your Motorcycling!
