It's Mr Yaigis 30th soon. I was originally going to buy him a rather expensive go in a plane (some 'Top Gun' Day in a Bulldog ex-military training aircraft), but when I mentioned it to test the water he was of the opinion that if it's not a jet plane he's not interested Laughing He was serious as well, he just wants pure speed and that's something he thinks you don't get in a plane with propellers Rolling Eyes . So, until I one day have the thousands of pounds to send him to Russia or somewhere that even lets you have a go in such a plane, that plan is thwarted.

My next thought is some kind off off road motorbike thing, so I thought I would ask on here if anyone has been to one and has any recommendations? I think he'd have fun doing that, something he's never done but does love muddy mountain biking and throwing himself down scary hills so I reckon he'd enjoy it.

There's also a gift thing for a couple of hours on a Honda powerboat that I could get him, but that's the third option at the moment... possibly even an 'additional' gift as it's only 50 quid.

Open to any other ideas of course related to motorbiking/going very very fast/doing something properly memorable. I probably won't be able to do any of this stuff with him as currently pregnant Thumbs Up

His bike wouldn't be suitable for a track day and he doesn't have leathers. Leathers are actually another gift idea.... he did mention wanting some a little while ago...

We're in West Lancashire - I was thinking I should have added that, d'oh!

I was looking at this for myself. Triumph do offroad training and experience days - you can either bring your own bike or use one of their Tiger 800s.

Not the cheapest at around £300 IIRC but the reviews seem to be quite good.

Having rode one of those for a few minutes I can safely say that's not my idea of fun. Give me a track/trail in Wales and a proper enduro bike like a 250f. Tiger 800s can do light trails but nothing remotely challenging.

I was just looking at this one:
https://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/world-of-bmw/off-road-skills/

I did a BikeSafe day recently and this programme was a topic of conversation among the police, some of whom had done it and loved it.

I would like to do this or something similar. (Maybe I can drop a hint to the wife...) Carol Nash is currently running a contest for a weekend on this course, open to any BikeSafe participant, which is the reason I was browsing the site. It looks expensive, but not outlandishly so (for what you get) and there are lots of open dates.

I don't think I would bother with those dual sport days, you want to be on a proper light off roader, something that won't break your legs if it falls on top of you.

Be warned your hubby may love is so much he spends your savings on buying an off road bike for green laning Razz

How about one of those Formula 1 passenger experiences?

I have always wanted to experience an F1 car, I think you can even do one where you get to drive a 2-3 year old F1 car now, but I think they are stupid money.

Any sort of "training day" will be dull as fuck imo, you're as well spending the money on a crosser and ragging the fuck out of it somewhere.

The fun day stuff has never done it for me as there is far too many restrictions in place, unless you pay top dollar, like £1500. Laughing

I'm liking Chalky's idea.

Laughing , savings.

I do agree with you though, I think a light off roader will be more fun to throw around.

Buy a bike guys?! C'mon, I aint MADE of money.... I'm thinking a couple of hundred quid kinda area.

I don't think he would be interested in Formula 1 passenger experience or anything to do with four wheels to be honest. I think he'd prefer to be in control too, it's much more fun when you get a go yourself.

Skydive isn't something he's ever mentioned as something he would want to do... I really don't know about that one, on the one hand I'm thinking yep, definitely memorable, and in theory it should be something he would love but the fact he's never mentioned it makes me wonder.

Does he have a full driving licence?

If so, I've been looking into Ariel Atoms... apparently they are damn fun and people were raving about their 3 hours in one.

Did a free off road experience day last summer and whilst I got home rather bruised from being too much of a hero on a jump, it was some of the best fun I've ever had! This is coming from someone who has never ridden off road before and gets scared of gravel on the road Laughing

They had a selection of 125cc and 250cc 4 and 2 strokes for us to try, as well as an electric one. If I'm honest I enjoyed the electric one most (no gears to worry about so you can concentrate on the terrain) and the 250 4 stroke next after that. The 2 strokes are very peaky and you spend more time thinking about the motor than enjoying the environment if you're a newbie.

I wouldn't do one on a big beamer or triumph. Off roading is all about light bikes imo.

edit: These are the guys I spent most time with on the day, although KTM and Kawasaki were also involved and have similar events: https://www.yamaha-offroad-experience.co.uk/

He does indeed... sounds expensive though - 3 hours is quite a lot of time (going by what I've seen in terms of gift days so far).

The BMW training day looks a bit too formal with it's levels and stuff, I was thinking something more of a quick run down of health and safety, kit you up, let you go crazy kinda thing. There was a thread on these forums a while back with a review of an off road bike thing by someone, I'll have to try and dig it out...cos it sounded dead good, they got to attempt jumps and stuff.

Where was this then!? Maybe you're the one I was referring to in my above post!

This is what I went to: https://www.rideoffroad.co.uk/

Go to the training schools tab, and you should hopefully find something suitable.

Nice one, I shall take a look Thumbs Up

Turns out you weren't the guy I was thinking of - found the thread I remember reading, sounds like he got through quite a lot:

Yeah I didn't do a thread on it. Probably should have though. The people at the BCF BBQ V2 had enough of my whining about sleeping in a tent with bruises though Mr. Green

Be warned. This has been known to cause obsessive window shopping for 125-250cc dirt and pit bikes. I haven't got one yet, but that's only because my partner has nearly bankrupted us with wedding planning Razz

Oh what a shame, that free day is that very weekend and registration started back in May so very likely no places left. Well worth remembering for next year, I think I'll sign myself up too! Mr Yaigi has already mentioned getting the kid into biking by starting off road so I think this may well be the start of a very expensive hobby... for us all Laughing Kids not even born yet and we've got the stabilisers off Laughing

Well, the proper suggestions are already done (up-and-Atom laps can be had quite inexpensively), so I'll just shove something in about letting him scramble up the mucky back road for his birthday.

Disappoint, etc.

Just so you know, jumping up and down is not the same as hovering.
