Hey, would I be stupid to try and repair my RHS fairing myself?

It's not damaged as such, it's just scuffed, mostly on the sticker but a bit of the blue at the bottom has been scuffed and will need spraying out.

If I remove the decals, mask off the good areas etc, can I simply sand down the scuffed area, filler if required, spray it then lacquer and will it match up with the rest of the blue perfectly? or is there a trick to touching up paint work?

I'm tempted to do it myself as all I'll need is a spray can of Yamaha Blue and a new decal.

I've tried spraying a panel before and it's turned out shit, mostly because I didn't prep the panel properly. But obviously with my proper bike panel I'm going to take a bit more care!!

Any advice appricieated.

p.s. I can't stand it being damaged and don't want a half-arsed bodge repair so if it's not likely possible to get a perfect finish with no painting experience then I'd rather buy a whole new panel.

Cheers.

Right you will have to spray the whole panel really if you try and bodge a bit it won't match it is posible to do it yourself but you have to prep everything right etc have the room where you are spraying the right tempriture etc.

That's what I was worried about, having to spray the whole panel, I'm no good at painting and will just mess this up so think it's going to be best to buy a new panel and sell this on ebay.

Thanks for confirming that it's not easy to just touch it up Thumbs Up

True, but it'd cost me a fair bit for the right paint and the decals etc.

There was a panel on ebay I wanted but I blame that on my mum as she made me stick up a blind whilst the auction ended for less than I'd have paid for it Crying or Very sad Laughing So it's her fault Wink Razz

Might leave it for a while and think about it later now. Might try and respray, might not Confused Thanks for advice though.

Without any experience touching up is a pain in the backside. Basically you need to feather the paint and lacker into the existing stuff.

If you mask off the good stuff you will end up with a hard line where the paint is different levels, so then you have to flatten and repaint, then flatten and lacker etc etc etc.

If you don't think you can pain a whole panel I wouldn't try and touch up mate.

Don't put filler in plastic fairing!

WIth the vibes it will just fall out thus ruining the paint you just put on to it.
If there are any crack's/holes use a plastic welding kit or bodge one like I did, by getting an old soldering Iron and some random bit of plastic you can melt (better it being ABS Plastic or similar) and melting it in to the crack/hole then sand it smooth so it matches and the prime it, few coats of paint and a bit of laquer.
And then a bloody good polish and re-apply the decals Very Happy

Or buy a new fairing panel or get one from a breakers or something or just get a proffesional to do it Wink

I know two really good plastic welderers/repairers who wont rip you off if you decide to let a pro do the work? One in Aldershot and one near Reading...

let me know and I'll send you their details

I patched up quite a bit of damage on my fairing, both holes and scuffs, and was quite impressed with how I did. However Hex is right and unless you spray the whole lot you'll have to deal with a raised line where the new paint is compared to the old paint. I can live with it because I can't afford a new panel and you can't tell it's there unless you peer at it Smile

It does take a lot of work though - sanding and spraying and resanding. You can get filler to do the job, from Halfords or from a specialist - I got an exact match paint from such a place and they sold me a filler as well.
