Unless it is clearly snapped off near the base and much too short...

You are supposed to have a ball on the end of the lever to stop it impaling pedestrians, maybe the lever is broken and that bit is missing?

If so, a ball of duct tape will do for MOT.

Or... could the lever travel or free play adjustment be too short/tight?

"Advisory" means just that. Ride it away, sort it or don't sort it.

It is actually a tested item, too much movement or snapped would more than likely give you an advisory.

As said above, the ball missing gets you an advisory if you have a particularly picky place.

How about too long? I've stuck new levers on my diversion, and they stick over the grips about a cm.

A drop will do it easily.

Simple to replace but given that you didn't even notice, I wouldn't bother.
