It isn't bikes, but hopefully a few of you might find this interesting. I'd also like to abuse you for questions... see later...

This August, me and three others are going to take two of these little chaps

https://www.flightofikarus.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/IMG_4420.jpg

and do this in them

https://www.flightofikarus.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/roughmap5.jpg

When (if!) we get to Crete, we're going to have a crack at breaking the world altitude record for microlights - over 25,000ft. We might be successful, we might fail miserably, that's all part of the adventure.

A bit of background... 2 C42 microlights that make less power than most folk's bikes and have considerably less luggage capacity. Confused We'll be hopping across Europe in 2 hour-ish jumps, aiming to fly about 8 hours a day. We'll be camping, not washing, cursing the weather... it'll be just like a bike touring holiday except that there are less places to get petrol and countries like Austra won't let us in.

Flying over water is scary. Flying over dense forest is scary. Flying near mountains is scary. Mother nature looks at a microlight and goes "lol, you idiots, I'm going to fuck up your day". If we can't see the ground, we're screwed. If it's too windy, we can expend an entire tank of fuel going backwards. If it's too nice, the ground heats up and weird winds do weird things like chuck you up 1000ft vertically with no warning. Or down, which is less fun.

The altitude attempt means being on oxygen, freezing cold and possibly running out of lift. Nobody's ever taken a C42 over 15,000ft. There may be a good reason for that.

I have 2 asks...

Pimping
If you think 'oh, that sounds a bit interesting' gave us a Like on Facebook - www.facebook.com/flightofikarus - it is disproportionately helpful to us. You can also check out the website (in my sig) for a bit more detail.

Questions
Ask away. I want to know what people want to know, cos that's the stuff we need to be putting on our website. I've got a few ideas but I bet you lot'll come up with some quite interesting questions, in amongst the inevitable pictures of cats. And its Friday so I know none of you are doing any work...

1st question:

When I hear the word 'microlight', I think of something like this:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/11/Pegasus_quantum_15-912_microlight_g-byff_kemble_arp.jpg/551px-Pegasus_quantum_15-912_microlight_g-byff_kemble_arp.jpg

Yours looks like a 'proper' plane, rather than a glorified hanglider.

I'd be far more impressed if you were taking one like the above up to 25K+ feet.

How come your plane is called a microlight, when it looks nothing like the others?

I've always wondered, how does refuelling work? Do airports have similarly functioning petrol stations (as in, you land, refuel, grab a porn mag, pay and get nectar points for it)?

P.S Dibs on the bike, in case your wings get caught on fire during an attitude attempt. Wink

Good question - That's probably the biggest 'marketing problem' we have - the plane looks too 'proper'. I'm thinking of shooting some vid to go into a bit more detail about all this shit, but basically as Hetz said, it's weight.

Microlights come in 2 flavours - flexwing (like you posted) and fixed wing. We have a maximum weight of 450kg - plane, people, fuel, luggage, that's what really classifies it as a microlight. A 'proper' plane will generally be doing at least twice that, if not shitloads more.

The light weight is great in that we don't burn much fuel, don't need much power and can get in and out of tiny fields. The downside is that it makes us like a ping pong ball in a windtunnel.

It also severely restricts how much stuff we can carry, and that stuff includes fuel. The main reason behind the 2 hour hops is we really can't carry any more petrol than that.

The plane is actually just tubes and fabric and thin fibreglass, it just looks pukka from a distance. I think I need to poke a camera around inside.

Thumbs Up

How does crossing borders work legally when you are 15,000 ft above the guys with clipboards?

Do you have to pay to land? Do you have to arrange where/when beforehand?

How much fuel does it carry and what would your MPG be?

How fast does it go (relative to ground speed)?

Basically, yes. Biggish airports usually have fuel onsite - there's jet fuel and avgas. They'll have one or the other... probably. Sometimes there's a pump you park next to, sometimes a lorry comes to you. Costs a bloody fortune if that has to happen.

The microlights can run on avgas or on mogas - just boggo petrol station unleaded. Mogas is used most of the time, cos it's cheaper. That tends to be a jerry can job, from the petrol station down the road.

On the trip, we'll be trying to get to fields that'll have avgas, but at some of the smaller ones there's a good chance it'll end up being a case of begging a lift to the Bulgarian version of Esso. If we can find a way to carry a couple of lightweight fuel cans, it'll make life a bit easier - then we'll only have to find transport, not transport and containers.

No. Razz

I've been flying since November and have a grand total of 2 hours solo at this point. Confused

Drift are supporting us - free cameras! We're filming the shit out of this trip for a self-released DVD.

What are you doing with the microlites when you get to Crete? Surely you're not flying them back again?

Has your custom title become ironic or was it always that way?

Here's a tip, go to www.Dropzone.com and go to the DZ finder and you can find small airfields dotted all over the place.

They all have AV gas, and tarmac runways. You see it happen quite frequently a 204 or 210 land pay the £5-10 landing fee and ask for the fuel truck.

DZs go through a ton of AV gas and have tankers onsite.

We had a private jet land at Cark once, it was actually quite normal and simple as it was a no jumping day. Be warned DZs are restricted airspace!

Good ones. Thumbs Up

Crossing borders isn't too bad - I think we only have to clear customs twice on the trip. There's various EU agreements about all that, so we need to do it when we get to France and then not again til Eastern Europe. You basically land and go see the customs man for forms and stamping.

You do generally have to pay to land - prices vary immensely. In the UK, a phonecall beforehand to say 'are you open, anything we need to know?' is generally sufficient (microlights don't have to file flight plans in the UK). On this trip there will be a mixture of places, some will need 24 hours notice, others none at all. In truth, the planning of all this is the stupidly complex bit - one guy is pretty much on this night and day, looking at route, permissions and stuff. There are so many airspace restrictions and places we can't go.

The aircraft has a 65 litre tank, but we won't be able to carry 65 litres 2-up with camping stuff - too heavy. MPG isn't really calculable - we burn about 12 litres an hour. How far that gets you depends if you're fighting a headwind or coasting along on a tailwind. Back of a fag packet... 32mpg if the air was still.

How fast suffers from the same thing. The 100hp C42s we're taking can sit between 70-80kts airspeed quite happily (roughly 80-90mph). Groundspeed could be anything, add 30kt wind up your arse or subtract it off your nose. You genuinely can go backwards (relative to the ground) with the engine at full chat if the wind is strong enough.

We're flying them back again. Cool

And lol. I got that a good 10 years ago. I've definitely got stupider as I've got older. Laughing

What happens if you cant make it to one of your planned stops because of a really bad head wind or something. Can you just land it in any old field?

How much do you estimate the flight will cost?

Do you have to do all the alpha-one-niner radio speak like in the movies?

Yeah, pretty much. That opens up a fresh hell of where to get fuel from, and hopefully doesn't get you shot at by any landowners, but the microlight mantra is pretty much 'if in doubt, stick it on the ground'. Pressing on to your destination when everything is going tits up is what'll get you killed.

We're still working on the costs! Reckon about £3k in fuel for the two aircraft. Landing fees, food, lifts to be begged wherever possible... We've got some really good support in both stuff, help and cold hard cash.

Yes we do. Thankfully English is the international language of aviation. But we'll be talking to people all the way - some bits will be controlled (they tell you what to do, you have to do it) other bits will be less so (from them advising you but you can ignore them, down to nobody tells you anything and you're on your own).

Apparently neither Austria or Switzerland allow 'Permit To Fly' aircraft in, and microlights all operate on a permit rather than a Certificate of Airworthiness. So we've got to go around them.

is italy of limits? judging by the look of the route unless your not allowed then going down the length of italy would be a shorter route and probably better looking from above.

Italy's a no-go zone. I can't remember the exact reasons but 'they'll probably chuck us in prison' was the upshot.
