Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts or experiences with alarm disc locks? I'm thinking of buying the Oxford Screamer. Are they built well and do they last long?

Thanks

IMHO no and no.

They are not that well built from a security use and they can be a hassle with false alarms and when batteries run out.

Again IMHO best use is in addition to a good quality disc lock and/or a decent chain and lock (examples ref: almax chain for one, Granit 37 disc lock for another, also can be used with chain).

That said if you want an alarm the Cyclone V2 is only about £30 ballpark IIRC - check click here - and it gets good reviews. Again to be used in addition to a decent lock/chain, preferably to an immovable object.

No doubt others may have different views and you may get a few recommendations of OK ones.

HTH Thumbs Up

Most disc locks are not weather-proof, so not much use when they are needed most - when parking the bike outdoors away from home. Just a little rain and the mechanism is fucked.

Xena locks seem more sturdy, and according to some reviews, if they are positioned so that rain does not hit the speaker holes directly, they can withstand the wet... not tried it myself yet, but the one I've got died after the second time it got rained on.

I'm happy with my Xena alarmed disc lock, but I only use it on my scooter when out and about, and only if I'll be away from it for no more than a couple of hours. It's light, and the warning beep is enough that you can do without using the reminder lanyard so you don't forget to take it off. Any disc lock will be a minor inconvenience to professional thieves.

At home, I have Almax series 3 & 4 chains, 1 each. If I'm going to leave the bike locked up somewhere for a while - e.g. at the airport while I'm out of the country - I'll bring along either of those chains. If I was commuting somewhere and had to leave my bike parked up in public all day every day, I'd probably buy a slightly shorter Almax series 3 and use that as well as the disc lock.

I have a xena xx14 .. Or is it xn14 .. I can't remember off the top of my head.

However im very impressed with it, its loud, sturdy and depending on how you position it as to how sensitive it is. Its easy to take around with you and looks like it would take a fair beating.

As for weather proofing its got rained on several times, also I chucked a bucket of water over it whilst it was on the bike the other day to rinse some dirt off, and other than go off due to the vibration caused its working fine still.

Not the cheapest but I recommend it Thumbs Up just my opinion

I had a Xena alarm lock. As the little bastard (not stainless, unlike the rest of it) bolt that holds the batteries in rusted solid and rounded off (and is impossible to get much to without smashing the lock into pieces), I now have a Xena lock.

Up till the batteries ran out, it was fine.

I have an Oxford screamer, it's uber-sensitive and goes off when droplets of rain hit it - not so good...

I've had multiple Xena alarmed disc locks, all of which have been terrible in the alarm department. Maybe I'm just unlucky but my first one stopped arming its self after falling about 1 foot, returned it and had it repaired, was found faulty and 'fixed' but when I got it back it had countless false alarms. Second one I bought was their top model at the time but that still messed me about, arming and disarming whenever it wanted and going off at random, I still use this but have removed the batteries, it is now simply a disc lock.

As I say, I'm probably just unlucky and manage to get duff ones, I shan't be buying another from them though.

Had a Xena disc lock alarm (the yellow sorts)

Worked fine for 3 months, then the alarm failed, nothing could set it off.
Sent it back to be repaired via Ghost ghosts, who on a side note I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Green
Once returned it worked for a further 2 days before failing again.
Full refund and got myself a Datatool Thumbs Up

Lesson learnt:
# Disc Lock
# Alarm

Don't combine the two in one product

Got one of these you know the type the un branded lock.

https://static.lfgss.com/attachments/14647d1252221574-alarmed_disc_lock.jpg

Purchased it off ebay for £10 I believe it was, still works will go off if you touch the bike or go near it (now it goes off if I lock it and move it as I don't have disk brakes any-more).

Can't fault it one bit, but like chinese bikes at the moment you can get one good bike in a batch of thousands.

This. Pure dogshit.

Cyclone v2 installed in a plastic bag FTW. Same money & actually worked, however sensitive to water damage.

+1 - I've bought a Cyclone V2, it works well and has the advantage of also flashing the indicators. I've still got the Oxford screamer (and it still works) but I only arm the siren when I park it at work because it goes off every time it rains - getting out of bed at 3am to go outside in the rain to turn it off isn't something I plan on doing again.

Well after the attempted theft of my bike last night I need some security. I have a disc lock and the bike has Suzuki's imobolizer thingy bob on it. I'm not looking to spend mega bucks but something that's going to alert me if my bikes touched.

Budget probably £100 max plus fitting.

What are the best options
