Van reversed into me

So this morning riding into work, I stopped behind 2 vans on a side road. The one infront of me started reversing so I hooted, but he kept coming, I tried to scramble backwards & shouted but he hit me & my bike went down. Obviously pretty pissed off I went up to him & told him to pull over (as it looked like he wanted to leave).

He got out & said the van in front of him kept coming backwards. I asked him why didn't he beep then (rather than also reversing back)? By this point he was apologising every 2 seconds, & offered to help pick my bike up, but I did it myself. The only damage was a little rip to the grip, but some fuel leaked out the tank, which's why at first I thought the damage was more extensive.

He then left & I took his reg, started my bike & rode the further 2mins I was away from work The bikes fine, but should I have taken his details, pictures? I thought he'd just say I crashed into the back of him. My shoulders also a little sore but I'm not sure if that's from the bike going down or picking it back up

If there is damage and you want to claim, provide his reg details to your insurance co. It is all you need. Be prepared for "you rode into the back of me" though.

You know better for next time. ALWAYS get details as damage may not at first be visible.

Petrol leakage is no big deal on a carb'd bike that has been on it's side, that will be the float bowl emptying.

Id claim due to him trying to get out of it, was the van infront of him actually reversing or was it a load of bullshit?

did you get a contact number for him?
give him a call if you do and claim £5 for fuel and £20 for the new grip.

damage on both would show he reversed into you.

Ah, I thought it was coming from the petrol cap. I dunno what the van ahead was doing, don't even know why they stopped as there was nothing coming the other way. What puts me off claiming is having an accident on my record. I think I'd have a hard time proving it was his fault (without video evidence) & I didn't get his number.

need more info to how they where parked, try get his info and speak to his insurance see if you can settle without insurance being involved.

If the damage is just a torn grip I would forget it. Even having a non-fault claim can bump your insurance up. Put it down to experience and leave a bit more gap behind vans especially if they have no rear door glass. They can't see you.

I'm a van driver too, but as they had just set off from the lights I came across them going a bit quick. Still if someone did reverse towards me I wouldn't also start reversing.

Never stop behind vehicles if you can help it, always stop to one side so they can see you, so they can't reverse in to you, and so you don't get squashed if the vehicle behind doesn't stop. I wouldn't bother persuing the case and it isn't worth the effort and you have no evidence or witnesses.

Personally, i'd have checked the bike over there and then & asked for a tenner to cover some new grips. Then left it at that. I did exactly this when a woman knocked me off & snapped a brake lever. She happily payed up for a new lever & that was that. I got a pot noodle with the change too

Had they got cunty & blamed it on me & got all shouty & sweary i'd have immediately gone to A&E and set about claiming every single penny off the twat. As per whats about to happen to the muppet that ran my foot over & claimed i'd driven into the side of her car.

He didn't say he didn't see me. I think he just panicked when he saw the van reversing & decided to reverse too (maybe without looking). I wasn't right up his ar$e either, but can't say for sure if he could see me or not. My positioning wasn't perfect, but if I was more to one side, he might of done more damage to the bike or me.

Happened to me twice, once on my bike and once in the works car!
On my bike, an artic reversed into my bike on a, farkin', main road.
Fortunately the whole thing was witnessed by a traffic warden, I got paid out.
In the works car, a van reversed into me, I went through the work insurance, the van driver claimed I ran into the back of him, the keys wern't even in the ignition at the time, , but with no witnesses it went 50/50.
Without a witness you're wasting your time!
