Hi Guys after some advice pls.
Just bougtht a 600cc 04 Hornet its a lovely bike and has 15000 miles on it.
First problem I had was a flat battery so I replaced that.
The other day it just would not start and it appeared the battery was flat ! however after leaving a few minutes it started ?
Just been out for an hours ride when I came to a roundabout it just cut out and would not start I turned the reserve on and it started however the speedo was erratic and kept dropping then spinning round to max speed along with rev counter all the way to the petrol station and home ?
Also in the morning I leave it on full choke to warm up while I go and put my stuff on when I go back to the bike I can smell a slight burning smell.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Yeah, the bike has to be earthed, also worth checking your connectors etc. for corrosion.

Regular rectifier converts the ac current supplied from the stator to dc to then charge the battery. It also smooths out the voltage to the 12v required by the battery. They're a known crap point of Hondas.

That's kind of a simplified version of what they do. Thumbs Up

Wouldn't say that to the old skool chop builders. Just about every chop I've had used a superdream reg/rec. Not a clue on the modern ones though Smile

where are you based? If local I could probably have that sorted for you as i've near enough stripped mine right down and rebuilt when I was having problems

sounds as though it's either bad earth, reg/rec (i'd bet this is most likely, I have a reg/rec to hand) or new plugs needed

Tank's a doddle to remove - just make sure you connect both the fuel outlet pipe and the vacuum pipe to the tap when you put it back on. You don't need to remove it to remove or replace the battery though - just for access to the reg/rec.

You'll need to run some tests before you can really decide where the problem lies. For that you'll need a multimeter - cheap from Maplins or similar. Check the voltage at the battery terminals with the ignition switch off - it should be in the range of 12-12.5V. Start the engine and check the voltage again, it should be about the same then rev the engine to around 4-5k - the voltage should increase to 13.5-14v if the charging system is working properly.

Intermittent loss of power can be down to a few things but checking earth connections (at the battery and at any point that the wiring bolts to the frame or enging) is a good place to start.

I have a feeling my reg/rec was actually moved at some point as it's actually mounted on the side near the battery on my 03 hornet, if it has then the brackets been welded well.

Unfortunately i'm nowhere near you, other side of the country.
Get yourself a multimeter and start checking things over

i've also fit a permanant voltage meter to my bike to the dash which is connected to the battery and displays the current voltage whenever I have it switched on, might give me a heads up if my reg goes again

Mine's an 02 and it's definitely under the tank. In fact the last time I changed the plugs I had to remove it to gain access to No 3. Maybe they moved it somewhere more sensible on later models. Thumbs Up
